I feel like for the past couple of years at least, all I've been hearing is a lot of yelling about how people don't want to pay taxes. All these people claiming they're being "taxed to death." Tea Partiers running around with their "Taxed Enough Already!" signs. Dire warnings that if the wealthy "top producers" in America have to pay a higher tax rate, they'll all drop out of business and take their jobs away from us.

Now we have a big snowstorm and all I'm hearing are people shouting that their streets should have been plowed already because that's what they pay taxes for.

I don't get it. We want all the services that taxes fund and yet we don't want to pay taxes. We don't want the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes either because they deserve to keep everything they make and recycle it tax-free in perpetuity for their inheritors.

You think this snowstorm sucks? You ain't seen nothin' yet. Wait till the firehouses start closing. Wait till there are no more cops on the beat. Wait till you get a busy signal on 911. But by all means, keep dressing up like Ben Franklin and bitching about taxes at those Tea Party rallies.

Oh and one more thing, a message to NBC. Just because you were scheduled to broadcast the Eagles/Vikings football game on Sunday night? Does not mean the game's cancellation due to the storm deserves a slot on your nightly news for two nights in a row. It also does not mean that the Pennyslvania governor's idiotic comment that we've turned into "a nation of wusses"* deserves to be reported as if it were a major news story. You can be a news organization or you can shill your NFL broadcasts, but you can't do both. I recommend you stick with the shilling and leave the journalism up to guys like Jon Stewart.

*PA governor Ed Rendell's full comment was, "We've become a nation of wusses. The Chinese are kicking our butt in everything," he said. "If this was in China do you think the Chinese would have called off the game? People would have been marching down to the stadium, they would have walked and they would have been doing calculus on the way down."

What the fuck is this even supposed to mean? The Chinese are kicking our butts because someone had the smarts to cancel a stupid ballgame in the middle of a howling blizzard?

I'd go with the idea that the Chinese are "kicking our butts" because they have a huge impoverished population that is willing to work for slave wages. Or that the Chinese are "kicking our butts" because their heavy industries have almost no regulation and so they have no qualms about manufacturing toxic products on the cheap and turning many parts of their country into an environmental hellscape in the process. Or maybe that the Chinese are also "kicking our butts" because we seem to have an almost insatiable demand for cheap crap. But I highly doubt they're "kicking our butts" because we won't go to a football game in a blizzard.
