Today I finally finished In Country. I wrote the last word at exactly 12 noon on this day, March 25th, which as any Tolkien reader can tell you is Ring Day and Gondorian New Year's Day, and as any Catholic can tell you is the Feast of the Annunciation. I consider this a fortuitous day to finish a story that's been dogging me for nearly a year.
It still has several rounds of proofing to go through so it'll be a little while before it's ready to go public but I'm just so glad it's done. It's funny too because I wasn't supposed to be home today and yet circumstances unexpectedly arranged themselves so that I'd be home to finish this story at 12 noon on March 25th. I was so happy when I wrote that last word that...I went and scrubbed the kitchen. I didn't even know what I was doing. It was really sunny in there and I just grabbed a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and scrubbed down the fridge and the stove and the sink and the range hood. Then I made myself a big sloppy egg-and-bacon lunch. Tonight I'm going to scenic New Jersey to have dinner at Ruby Tuesday. I'm so glad it's done.
I feel superstitious about this post. I've been sitting here thinking of deleting it, but I won't. If something terrible happens to me and I never get to post the last chapter, consider this post an impromptu last will and testament and I hereby leave my laptop to
baylorsr so that she can post it for me.
