Oct. 25th, 2007 10:45 pmFirst off, Ruby's a breath of fresh air after all that high-toned glamour crap from Bela last week. I was actually happy to see her. So at least there'll be one new character this season that I can tolerate and that actually seems to have something plausible to do with the SPN universe. Personally, I'd be happy if I never saw Bela again. Even her name annoys me.
I enjoyed Dean's scene with Casey (heh, not that Casey!). I loved the little change that flickered over Dean's face when he asked her what Hell was like -- Jensen Ackles does subtle like no one else. You know what else he does like no one else? GETS HIS ASS KICKED. And except for some minor strangling action, this is the fourth week in a row that Dean hasn't sustained any serious injuries. I don't even think I've seen him with blood picturesquely trickling down his perfect face once. WTF??
Why oh why are we now supposed to empathize with demons? I don't want to hear about their belief systems or relationships or anything. THEY'RE DEMONS, OKAY? I'm not going to have had these guys running around for two years exorcising them and shooting them only to find out they're...what? Tragically misunderstood!?
What also bothered me about Dean's scene with Casey was that it didn't tell us anything that we don't already know. OK, maybe we got a little exposition on demons, found out Lucifer is real and that Dean's not exactly going to have a cakewalk in Hell -- but hey, I just saw Constantine on Tuesday and they pulled this off a lot better. There was nothing unexpected in Casey's speech. And Dean's already told us that he's tired and kind of looking forward to shuffling off this mortal coil, so there was nothing new there either. Sort of a waste of what could have been really powerful stuff.
Speaking of a waste, I felt like the scene between Sam and Ruby at the end was a rehash of the scene we just saw in another motel room two weeks ago. I am not so dimwitted that I don't remember that Ruby is dangling Dean's salvation before Sam's eyes. Whatever though, I was just so happy that Ruby was keeping Bela away. If she's Bela-repellent she can totally stay. Especially now that they've done away with those super-shiny banana curls.
Still loves me some Bobby but, umm...didn't he just murder the poor girl that Ruby is possessing? And didn't the Colt need magic bullets to work, too? Have they just revised their own mythology or did I miss something?
Oh, god. Frigging Supernatural is making me feel stupid!
At least there was some real music in this episode. Though not enough. Not enough by far. I long for the days of "Carry On My Wayward Son" and "Renegade." OMG.
