I was riffing on the writer's strike when it started because I was pissed about the absence of The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and of course, Supernatural from my TV set. But the more I read about the strike, the more I support the writers. It's the studios and networks who are opposed to the strike and here's a pretty good formula: if millionaires and billionaires are opposed to something, you should support it. The average member of the WGA (Writer's Guild of America) earns $5,000 a year off their writing. Meanwhile, a guy like Les Moonves (head of CBS) earns more than $26 million per year. And it's guys like Moonves* who are saying they just can't afford to pay writers residuals on "new media." Mmm-hmmm. As a lot of blogs have been pointing out, this strike isn't about some pampered, filthy-rich Hollywood writers wanting more money. This is a labor issue, and any success of labor, no matter what the industry, is a success for people like me, and probably, people like you. Period.

Here's a link to a post featuring comments from Ron Moore, showrunner of Battlestar Galactica, about one of the issues involved -- getting paid for "webisodes": http://www.firedoglake.com/2007/11/14/writers-strike-why-should-you-care/

And here's a link to a really great blog that's covering the strike in general: http://unitedhollywood.blogspot.com/.

Today I also read that the Writer's Guild of Great Britain is pledging their support for the strike. They won't be striking themselves, but they have urged their members not to scab themselves out to American networks and studios. Good for them.

Speaking of television, tomorrow is Supernatural night, but I have chosen to accept an invitation for some afterwork libations (i.e. binge drinking) down in Alphabet City. Was going to pass it up, but last week's depressing episode convinced me that I don't really need to be on my couch at 9:00 pm every Thursday, especially not for an episode that is going to serve up another round of Bela Talbot, possibly the most unnecessary and inexplicable character in all of Christendom. I did decide to set my VCR however, if for no other reason than to record over "Red Sky At Morning," which I never, ever want to see again. I saved it up to Dean's hyperventilation, because that was deeply adorable, as was Sam's brotherly concern. Dean also looked especially short next to Sam in that scene and I have a strange, simpering attachment to Short!Dean scenes.

In all likelihood, I should stop myself now, but I do want to say one more thing. I know there are many of you out there who are going to love this show no matter what and only want to hear happy, squeeful things about it. That's totally cool, but I'm not among your ranks, and at this point, I'm not going to choose to say nothing if I can't say something nice. Last week's episode was of a show so different from the show I fell in love with over the summer that I couldn't help being very negative about it. That's because I still care enough to be angry. I can't remember who said it, but the saying goes that the opposite of love isn't hate, it's apathy, and boy is that the truth. When I start saying nothing about Supernatural, it'll be because I just don't care anymore, and that will be when I'm offically out of love with it. Right now, I still care. I'll try to put a "negativity" warning on any cuts so that you can avoid getting your buzz harshed, if you choose.

*P.S.: It's also guys like Les Moonves who hire gals like Dawn Ostroff, who tell writers like Eric Kripke that they need to insert characters like Bela Talbot into beloved and established series like Supernatural. So I definitely know whose side I'm on in this thing. Union YES!

Speaking of the strike, just saw a great you-tube clip from The Daily Show writers that I think you'll enjoy. Well, at least, I enjoyed it. ;-)

Just think, without Dawn Ostroff we could've had a year of Ellen instead of a year of Bela. I think that's evidence enough of how idiotic the studios are. Go Union!

Ha! And that was totally on the WGA blog you linked to. Great minds and all that, I guess. =D

That clip rocked, and now I'm seeing it all over the place. John Oliver popping up was so unexpected and so FABULOUS.

Just think, without Dawn Ostroff we could've had a year of Ellen instead of a year of Bela.

Oh, for what might have been!!
