Now, I know the scene was atmospheric and all, but seriously...why was Dean buried in Bumfuck, Illinois? Beneath some creepy jacked-up cross that looked like a prop from The Blair Witch Project? Are we supposed to believe that Sam considered this an appropriate resting place for his brother?

I'm pretty sure the show went with that grave scenario for the atmosphere alone and the hell with making sense. I love good atmosphere and mood and the first few minutes of the episode were really visually compelling but then when you sit there and think about it, it just doesn't scan. If they were going to bury Dean anywhere, why not at Bobby's? Or maybe somewhere in Lawrence? Or will it be revealed that Sam knew he had to bury Dean in that particular spot for some supernatural reason? No, that can't be it, because Sam was just as shocked as anyone to see his brother back.

So, really, Sam...Illinois? Why?

I don't know if they have some reason they plan to reveal later on. What I thought was that they hid his grave that way because they were afraid it would be descrated by demons if they knew where he was buried. I'm probably wrong/

My very first assumption was that they got out of New Harmony as fast as possible but didn't make it back to Bobby's house, so Sam buried him in as remote a place as he could find as soon as he crossed a state line, since Pontiac is kinda sorta on the way, and put the cross up so he'd be able to find it again in the middle of the woods when it came time to dig Dean up. (Which makes even less sense, but moving on.) But Bobby made it sound like Dean didn't get buried right away, and that still wouldn't explain why they didn't just bring him back to SD, so I dunno.

Yes, that's extremely fanwanky, I have no idea.

(Sorry, hi, I friended you a couple days ago.)

Somebody posted to [livejournal.com profile] supernatural_tv that Pontiac, IL has a Route 66 museum - that's the best guess I've seen so far, but who knows...

I just assumed Sam had hidden Dean away somewhere remote so that it would be easier for him to carry out whatever graveside rituals he had in mind in secret - Bobby's is right out because he'd have probably tried to stop him. I also assume he'd avoid consecrated ground so he wasn't limited in what he could try.

Maybe... because if he is buried in the same cemetery where his parents are, it will ruin that beautiful place.

OK. Ignore it. I'm as puzzled as you are.

My assumption (although you know where THOSE get us) was that Sam deliberately buried him somewhere remote to minimize questions/problems (from passersby and the like) when he got Dean back. I'm not sure whether there's any significance to the location.

This is much better than my explanation which basically boils down to, "Because it looked cool."

I like [livejournal.com profile] ghyste's explanation, above.

It's still kind of sad to think of Dean interred out there in the middle of nowhere.

Still doesn't explain the significance for Dean. Or Sam. And where'd the coffin come from?

I think this will be one of those things that's just never explained. It was a cool shot, though. And I really loved Dean pulling himself up outta there. Never saw anyone look so nice and fresh after digging himself out of his own grave.

I think I need to watch this ep again. I recall Bobby saying that Sam didn't want to burn Dean's body but I don't remember if he explained anything else.

I remember Bobby continued saying Sam said he didn't want to burn Dean's body because Dean's gonna need a body to return to. Or something like that.

And the nameless grave. Yeah that's weird enough. Perhaps because Dean is a very famous person amongst the demons. So Sam didn't give any name in his grave. He buried his brother in the a very remote area, perhaps because of the same reason.

In defence of your theory, it did look very cool :)

Sadly, I suspect we'll never get a satisfying answer.

Got me wondering about the coffin now, though...there can't be much call for a simple pine box these days. Did Sam drop by a Home Depot to pick up some lumber or what? ;)

I know that New York City still buries its unidentified dead in plain wooden coffins (as Dickensian as that sounds, it's true). I seem to recall that coffin had some kind of lining when Dean was looking up at it? I don't want to get all worked up watching the episode again. I suppose one could find a properly sized wooden crate just about anywhere. It's rather difficult to think of Sam a-coffin' buildin' while Dean's corpse is cooling in the back of the Impala. Damnit Kripke, I want some flashbacks!!

Flashbacks would be nice...they left so many unanswered questions!

I wondered that myself. If Sam was so hell-bent on burying Dean, I would think he'd have insisted that it be either in Lawrence or at Bobby's, not some random lot in Illinois. But then we wouldn't have Dean waking up all alone and confused. He would have just gone into Bobby's house and given him a heart attack when he came downstairs and found Dean drinking coffee in the kitchen.

Two words: COMEDY GOLD! Why am I not seeing this comment until now? How weird.
