Great Numbers!

oselleI subscribe to some media industry newsfeeds at work, which mostly deliver a grim daily reminder of how the print publishing industry (i.e. my industry) is slowly becoming extinct, but every once in a while drop me some tasty tidbits about Supernatural, giving me the delirious thrill of reading about SPN under the guise of doing my job. Today's Media Life Daily reported that last night's episode posted its highest ratings of the season among the 18-34 age group, tying for fifth place with Grey's Anatomy. Fifth place might not sound so hot but considering that CW shows usually come in a dismal sixth (and often far behind whatever telenovella is airing on Univision), that is really, really great news. Congrats to them!
ETA: Just found out that these ratings are SPN's best showing in that age group since 2006!! I smell a sixth season....!
I was chatting with someone about how much I liked Chuck's character when I began to wonder what is the point of Chuck continuing to prophesy when no one is listening. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they say that the books were no longer being published? If no one is reading Chuck's prophecies, then why are they so important that an actual angel (and apparently a high-ranking one) showed up to menacingly tell him that he had to "keep writing" and that even death itself would offer no release from his task (which appears to be driving him insane or at least into alcoholism)?
I'm surprised they didn't at least say that Chuck was continuing to publish his work on the internet. It's not like he wouldn't have an outlet. Of course if he were to do that I hope that God or perhaps Zachariah would tell him to throw some slash in there to up his readership. I mean...the fate of the world does depend upon it.

Frankly, Chuck was a very unusual sort of prophet, not predicting the future but rather recording the present in real time, yet believing all the while that his stories were pure fiction. And how did it/does it serve God for an apparently tiny group of devoted geeks to read about the exploits of these two brothers when they think those stories are just fiction too? What ultimate difference will it make to the outcome of this apocalypse for this record of the Winchesters doings to be out there?
And as for the Winchester Gospel...as I said last night, wouldn't the eventual existence of such a thing tell us that the Winchesters are bound to prevail and stop the apocalypse? Nice spoilage there, Castiel.
And if Lilith really does want to save her own skin by calling a truce and keeping Lucifer locked up then why does she still need the Winchesters' heads on a stick?
And why on earth is Sam so smugly confident that he's going to be able to kill Lilith when he wasn't able to do it now and he came thisclose to banging her instead?
And how weak in the knees did I get when Dean started praying?
And when is Castiel going to just up and ditch his own grace to be with Dean?
And is Jensen just going to keep getting prettier until none of us can watch the show anymore?
Important questions, people. Important questions.

Date: 2009-04-04 04:09 am (UTC)Argh. Want article but don't want spoilery stuff!! I can understand that they don't want the show to go past a fifth season. Sam and Dean aren't really the sort of characters that can be comfortably inhabited for years and I definitely don't want their fatigue with these roles to start showing. At the same time though...these seasons go by so fast. I can't believe Season 4 is almost over. And next year at this time...it'll all be almost over!!! I don't even want to think about that. I just don't.
How many fics has this happened in already?
You know it's weird...as much as I love Castiel, I've never read any Dean/Castiel. I kind of like Castiel as this completely otherworldly being and I don't want to shatter the illusion. But if Canon!Castiel keeps making those moony eyes at Dean...I dunno.

I've pretty much given up trying to reconcile the SPN Biblical bits with real world religion, so Chuck and his Winchester Gospels just sort of washed over me, but the lack of logic around Lilith's actions had me going "bwah?".

Date: 2009-04-04 10:19 pm (UTC)Oh, I agree, you can't possibly draw any parallels between SPN theology and real theology, but the fact is that history is written by the winners. If Lilith or Lucifer triumphs then presumably there wouldn't be anyone left to write (or read) a new gospel.
