A friend lent me the first season of HBO's True Blood and I just ran through all 12 episodes this weekend. I'm kind of meh about vampires but my friend is absolutely bananas about this show and also I really wanted to check out what Raelle Tucker's up to these days (she was a writer and producer on the first two seasons of SPN for anyone who doesn't know and IMO the show's never been the same without her but that's a rant for another time).

Anyway, one of the main characters is named Sam. Unbeknownst to the good people of Bon Temps, Louisiana, Sam can shapeshift into a dog. One night Sam, in his dog-form, follows the beleaguered heroine Sookie home and she decides this poor stray pup needs a name so she christens him...Dean. Upon which follows much, "Good boy, Dean!" and "Dean, you're sleeping on my foot," hilarity. Good thing the episode ended right after that because I literally couldn't concentrate on anything. Oh, Raelle Tucker...I miss you.

Actually, Raelle, if you want to invite any of the cast members from your old show over to Bon Temps please, feel free. Because I have never, ever seen so much naked on a show. I don't think there's a single primary cast member who didn't strip off at least once in the first season. The guy who plays Jason Stackhouse had his clothes off more often than on (rather disturbing given his uncanny resemblance to a young George W. Bush).

And the fornicating! My word!!

I totally love that show even when I'm not sure why. And I laughed all through the Sam the bartender being Dean the dog. I had no idea there was an SPN connection there.

Pretty much everything HBO does, they do well. Even when a show has its weaknesses it's still very well put-together. I tend to hold everything on HBO up everything to the Deadwood standard and True Blood is no Deadwood but it's still a lot of fun.

Dean the dog

And he was a pretty dog, of course!

She's too good for us now. HBO, la-di-da.

I miss the way she wrote Dean more than anything. I felt like she was the only one of all the show's writers who really put thought into his character.

My brother and sister-in-law love that show, and I've been meaning to try it. I didn't realize Raelle Tucker was writing for it! (and, it's about the South, right?)

Will have to put it in my netflix queue--right after the 80s Brideshead (that list is getting long, thanks to you!)

Actually, the Sam/Dean thing was in the first book, which was published way before SPN started.

Yes, it's set in Louisiana. It's entertaining as all getout even though vampires bore me silly. Truth be told, the vamps are the least interesting part of True Blood and the constant parallels drawn between "vampire rights" and gay rights/civil rights are both laughably silly and somewhat offensive but like I said...it's entertaining. HBO doesn't ever really make bad television.
