He loved Dean in the way that Dean let himself be loved and Cass had never laid a desiring hand on him yet if Dean had ever shown any sign of wanting that from him Cass would have given him anything he asked. But he hadn't. Hence the men, who had been neither one of them Dean and so there had been only two and no more.
Although I ship Dean/Castiel like crazy in fanfic -- and think that canon!Dean may love Cas as his friend and guardian angel -- this *one-sided* romantic/sexual love is exactly how I imagine it to be between them in canon.
