I saw a trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes movie this weekend, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson.

This has got to be the gayest frigging movie ever made. The entire trailer was basically a Holmes/Watson bromance.

How gay is it? At one point in the trailer, the two leads are riffing on each other and token female Rachel McAdams rolls her eyes and says, "They've been flirting like this for hours."

And yet, some people think it's weird that women write and read slash. Eric Kripke, I'm looking at you, you middle-aged, bald asshole.

Not only is that gay, but it's not even close to the original Holmes. Quips? Love interest? Supernatural villain? Book Holmes made it a point to disparage them all. But to be fair, the original Holmes stories would make lousy cinema. Heck, why not sex it up a little.

The one part that was close to canon was a Shirtless!Holmes fighting in a warehouse somewhere. No such scene was portrayed directly in the stories, but Holmes was an admitted drama queen, and he made several references to offstage fisticuffs.

I've never read any of the Holmes books but that trailer made it pretty clear that they're going way, way off canon on this. Except the gay part. I don't think you could be a Victorian Englishman without being gay.

So gay and so awesome! I am so looking forward to this movie!

If I'm not mistaken, some of the "first" fanfiction was actually generated around the Holmes stories--don't if any of it was slash though--

I took a Sherlock Holmes class way back in the day at college and I think I remember him being some sort of pugilist at one point.

I am more than happy to park any of my Holmes expectations for Robert Downey Jnr flirting with Jude Law :D

Have I missed something? What has Kripke said about slash? I haven't seen season 5 yet but spoilers are fine.

Yes, Holmes took boxing in college. And I think he did punch out on or two guys later on.

If you've ever seen the 1980's Sherlock Holmes TV series on A&E and PBS (with Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke), that is pure canon. And I mean pure canon. They followed not only the dialog, but the original illustrations.

I didn't detect Teh Gay anywhere, but Watson would definitely be the Ennis and Sherlock the Jack. Waston was married twice, Holmes swore off women altogether.

I never knew Watson was married. How did Watson ever find time for it when he was always following Holmes around? Did his first wife die or did she finally get fed up and dump him?

What DID look like fun was the depiction (no doubt quite fictionalized) of Victorian-era London. The sets and costumes and everything look fantastic.

I will admit they made a very cute couple. But I think you will be disappointed in Downey's accent.

Kripke hasn't said anything directly about slash that I'm aware of. I was referring to the strange and, IMO, disdainful fascination with slashers that comes out in meta-episodes like "The Real Ghostbusters." He just seems to be so mystified and kind of horrified by the whole idea, as if SPN was the first show or book or movie ever to develop a slashy fandom. I remember feeling that way when I was a real fandom newbie, back in my LoTR days...I'd expect a guy like Kripke to be a little more savvy and blase about the whole thing, instead of writing stupid jokes about it into the show. Just my opinion and everyone's mileage may vary.

Watson and Holmes began by rooming together on Baker Street to save money. Watson was recovering from a war wound, Holmes not far out of college, and a mutual friend introduced them. After about a dozen cases, Watson married one of the clients who had come to Holmes for help, and established a medical practice nearby. Then Mrs. Watson died. I think Watson moved back in with Holmes for a while, but moved out again when he remarried. Holmes never left Baker Street. By that time he had earned enough money from high-level cases to keep the rooms by himself.

Watson often neglected his medical practice. In almost every story Watson has to say "oh I can neglect my practice for a few days" or "my partner can cover" or "it was a slow time of year" or something like that. Also Watson didn't follow on every adventure. Many times he showed up only in the evening, and Holmes would recount what he had done during that day, like punching out suspects.

I wonder if...nope, I don't wonder, I googled.
