I have to give another recommendation for Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy. Not just because it reads like good fanfic, but because I actually believe that Collins intentionally wrote it to inspire fanfic. The only fanfic element that's missing is the explicit slash but then you can't really expect that in books published by Scholastic for a pre-teen audience. But everything else is here, there's even a beautiful, tragic rentboy. I'm not joking. There's a beautiful, tragic rentboy with a heart of gold nonetheless. So technically speaking, there is slash, it's just implicit not explicit. Frankly, he's not even a rentboy, he's more of a sex slave. Even better! A beautiful, tragic sex slave with a heart of gold!

If SPN still has a big fandom going by the time these books are made into movies, I fully expect a proliferation of SPN/Hunger Games crossover fic. And Suzanne Collins will be loving it.

ETA: I also have a strong suspicion that Collins may have been a Dark Angel fan. Just a hunch.

The first second, the very first second they introduced Finnick "on screen" I though "Heh, I bet he looks like Jensen." And I NEVER have internal casting when I read books. And then, oh wait, it's only a cover because he's really a REBEL and he's TRAGICALLY IN LOVE with someone that the government is USING AGAINST HIM. Oh, and wait, the president is PIMPING HIM OUT.

I swear, it's like every fanfic I ever read it is just that relevant to my interests. My only complaint is that he dies rather ignominiously and offscreen but, still, after all of that there's no way Collins could have topped it all without making Katniss feel like Jessica Alba on Dark Angel.

In sum: I would love to watch Dark Angel with Suzanne Collins. I think it would be a magical experience.

OMG, me too! I mean seriously...the dark blonde hair? The "sea-green" eyes?" Come on. (TBH I can also see a Dark Angel-age Jensen as Peeta. What a pity Jensen is too superannuated to play either of these characters in the movies. Getting old's a bitch, ain't it?)

AAARGH you whore! Spoiler alert!!

No worries though because just this morning I was thinking that I knew, beyond any doubt, that Finnick was doomed BECAUSE HE IS TOO BEAUTIFUL TO LIVE. I do find the "offscreen death" thing unforgivable though. Major charaters, especially ones that are beautiful and doomed should never, ever die offscreen.

I would love to watch Dark Angel with Suzanne Collins. I think it would be a magical experience.

I am dead certain that Collins has both seasons of DA in her house. Probably quite well worn. Every time the rebels do an Airtime Assault I think "Oh, it's Eyes Only!" The book could use some cage-fighting though, don't you think?

I'm telling you, Collins is on LJ somewhere. And she's totally writing that epic, multi-part, neverending fic where Jensen/a character played by Jensen is tortured a lot.

I wonder if I've read it...

Fuck! I am a whore! I just got so excited about being able to talk about this with someone who would understand. I deeply apologize, especially since I spent a lot of Mockingjay chanting "Don't kill Finnick."

Moar cage fighting! No serious artistic work is finished without a good cage fight. mmmmm Alec cage fighting... Why don't I own season two of Dark Angel?

I'd never thought of Jensen for Peeta but now I can't stop seeing it. OMG, it's kind of a good thing that he's too old to play that part, cause it might just kill me to actually see some of that stuff. But at least I'd be happy in death.

Don't worry about the spoiler. As I said, I knew Finnick was toast. He was never a primary character and of course he was TOO BEAUTIFUL TO LIVE.

Jensen would have been especially perfect as Peeta because no one suffers as beautifully as Jensen and Peeta spends most of these books suffering -- either he's quietly pining away for Katniss or he's delirious with fever (FANFIC!) or he's got some hideous bleeding wound (FANFIC!!!!) or he's being tortured by the psi-ops baddies of the Capitol (!!!!!!!!OMGFANFIC!!!!!!!!)...just like when beautiful Alec was captured and psi-opped into catatonia after he refused to kill his true love in "The Berrisford Agenda" and OMG why do I know this?

Good lord, they even cut Peeta's LEG OFF! That is FANDOM QUALITY ANGST and I totally agree Collins has an LJ account out there somewhere. You don't write like this without being schooled in the basics.

Just don't tell me who Katniss winds up with, because frankly I want it to be Peeta, not Gale.

You should check out the fanfic story, "Bird of Paradise" by trinityofone (http://trinityofone.livejournal.com/201469.html). It's a SPN/Hunger Games fusion (written for the DeanCasBigBang) rather than a crossover, but it's wonderful!

What's the difference between a "fusion" and a "crossover?"

Date: 2011-02-26 11:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] measri.livejournal.com
A fusion is where the characters of one fandom are placed in the universe or setting of another fandom as if they had always been there - basically the story is retold/tweaked with the characters from the first fandom replacing/becoming the characters of the second fandom, as opposed to a crossover where the characters from both fandoms would meet and interact. In this case, I believe Dean is written as the Katniss-type character.

That's really interesting. I don't think I've ever heard the term "fusion" before. The never-ending intricacies of fanfic!

Thank you for this post, never heard of these books before and just looked them up and probably would have overlooked them as for "kids" had I not read your enthusiastic rec. Already have someone bringing them to me from the States later this month.

(I confess to being a regular lurker here, working through your riveting stories, hope to have the time to finish them, recced by the wonderful zatnikatel. We don't have S6 where I live yet, so intitially I was scratching my SPN itch with fic, but I've finally given into my curiosity and have been reading your reviews, thank you for the valuable public service :-).)

OMG FINNIIIIIIIIIIICK!!!! But yeah, by that point in the book I was so intent in finding out how it all ended that I didn't even realized that I'd totally missed the bit where Finnick died. I had to go back just to find out what happened to him.

I am so with you re: Peeta. I just can't understand how anyone couldn't be in love with him. It is endlessly sad that Jensen will never be able to play him in a movie. I'm sure whoever they cast won't live up to the image in our heads.
