5 Ways You Know This Was a Ben Edlund Episode:

1. A lecture from Bobby to Dean plays like genuine if curmudgeonly compassion instead of callous douchebaggery.

2. Said lecture ends with a great line like, "We gotta scrape up some cash and get you a condo."

3. You don't hate Sam.

4. Sam, Dean and Bobby are described as, respectively, "Big Bird, Ken Doll and Creepy Uncle," and you just sit there and laugh because it's so true. Especially the Ken Doll.

5. Castiel is credited not once, but twice, as the cause of Dean's melancholia.

That said, it was a pretty bizarre episode and I honestly think that between losing Castiel and being shifted (either voluntarily or not) to some sort of "consulting" role on the show, Ben Edlund just doesn't give a shit and is gonna write whatever craziness he wants. Which of course, makes me love Ben Edlund. I'll also admit that the ending and preview of the next episode kind of stunned me, though considering the next episode is the last one before midseason hiatus, I don't expect anything other than a giant cliffhanger at the end.

At this point I feel like they have to kill Bobby, or at least seriously incapacitate him (coma, maybe) because they've already implied his death before when leviathan burned his house down, and if they pull him back from the jaws of death this time too they'll seriously undermine their own attempts at building tension.

I have to admit that killing Bobby would be one of the first surprising things the show has done in a long time.
