Oct. 30th, 2007 08:55 pmDid you ever see that episode of Seinfeld in which George reveals his insidious power to get under women's skin? Sure, after one date, they think they never want to see him again but after a while, all they can think is, in George's words,"Co-stan-za!", which he sings to the tune of the "Buy Mennen!" commercial jingle. Remember that?
That's how my brain works, especially when it comes to fannish things. Dark Angel may have easily been one of the worst television shows I've ever watched but it's all I can think about. "Dark-an-gel!" I went and haunted the FYE store, which sells a lot of used DVDs, hoping to pick up Season Two, but no dice. Then I went to Barnes & Noble today and they had it, but for a whopping $40 and I stood there with it in my hands asking myself, "You're not going to do this, are you? You're not seriously going to do this?" like some burnt junkie staring down the disgusting ghetto alley where he swore he'd never go again but you know, just one more time won't hurt anyone, will it?
Let me tell you, friends, I put that box on the shelf. Oh, I will most definitely own Dark Angel one day, in spite of its utter awfulness, in spite of the fact that my first-ever viewing of it was almost entirely in fast-forward, in spite of the dog-faced boy and the Logan Virus and James Cameron's oh-so-obvious crush on the talentless Jessica Alba, in spite of all these things...I cannot get it out of my head. But I will be damned -- damned I say! -- if I will pay $40 PLUS TAX for this dreadful waste of airtime just to satisfy my pathetic need for 23-year-old proto-Dean Winchester instant gratification, when I can wait a few days and get it for about half that price on Amazon.com! I WIN!! I FUCKING WIN!! Dark-an-gel!
Oh, speaking of being damned, the store did have both Constantine and Angel Heart for under ten bucks, so I now own two movies about Hell which means I'll probably be joining a convent soon. And one final note -- watched Constantine again last night and if John Constantine and his teenage apprentice Chas Kramer can commit a Latin exorcism ritual to memory then so can Dean Winchester, and I bloody wish the producers of Supernatural knew it.

Date: 2007-10-31 02:11 pm (UTC)There is a new teevee show I love that I'm actually not ashamed to tout. Moonlight. It's on Friday night, a good night for obsessive fandoms (ref: The X-Files) A hunky vampire who's a private investigator; his budding relationship with a spunky, fearless reporter; his 400-year-old friend and confidant who is very much at ease with his own vampireness; and assorted amusing supporting characters. The acting is good, the scripts are pretty original, and it's all done in a film noir style. If you think this sounds like Angel, you are wrong.
Friday is now even more exciting because of this show. Check it out!
Hmmmm, I think I just wrote a post for my own LJ.

Date: 2007-10-31 10:58 pm (UTC)Understand what...the appeal of Dark Angel in spite of being one of the worst shows ever put on television? I blame proto-Dean entirely because this thing would have been unwatchable otherwise. "Alec" lit up every scene he was in, and not just with his pretty face. He even had great chemistry with the dog-faced boy.
I hate to tell you but I think Moonlight may be on the cancellation block..

Date: 2007-10-31 08:51 pm (UTC)Oddly, I always thought it was, "By Mennen"...like, made by. Makes much more sense to be "buy". One of my best friends in the whole wide world proclaims himself to be "George Costanza with a Camera". LOL! He's not far off, either (not in looks, but mostly in his obsessive ranting and raving and feeling the world is always out to get him and getting himself all wrapped up in some crazy conspiracy theory or other!). LOL!

Constantine is an awesome move and has a lot of the same elements as Supernatural only with a big feature film budget.
