Do you get attached to books? By which I mean physically attached?

I recently read Cormac McCarthy's The Road. It's very short and I read it through in about two days. It's grueling and I was happy to finish it. But it had that weird delayed reaction effect on me that I sometimes get, where there were parts of it that I felt compelled to go back to again and again. I officially finished reading it about three weeks ago but it was still out on the coffee table and I've been reading my favorite parts every day.

So my next door neighbor invited me to dinner and she actually brought the book up because a friend of hers read it and found it so appalling she couldn't finish it. I made the mistake of saying that I had just read it and then...before I could stop...I had to lend it to her! She asked me for it! What could I say? She'd just fed me dinner for crying out loud!!

She just walked out of her with my book. My obsessively-read-a-little-bit-every-day book! I fibbed and told her I needed it back by the weekend because I'd promised it to someone else. LIAR. But you know how it is with books...you lend them out, you never get them back! I loaned this same person my heavily highlighted and tabbed copy of Tolkien's Letters and I've never gotten that back! And now she's taken my book! My book!! My precious!!!

I do know that feeling. I have DVDs like that too.

It's like...even if I don't look at it, I just need to know it's in the house. Good news is that the neighbor called to say she's almost done with it. And she gave me my Tolkien letters back, too!

I like reading but I'm not attached to books. But there is an unwritten rule that no books or DVDs are allowed to be out of the house. :D

But now I'm attached to my cell phone because I save many of my favorite fics there. :D

Do you read them on your cell? How do you do that? Isn't it so tiny?

*is tech stupid*

It's quite tiny, but it's clear enough. :) I won't need a PDA because my cell is complete with everything. I can even watch clips from SPN, the one Sam gives Christmas present to Dean is my favorite. *sniffs*

I can't believe you let her have that book. This is why God invented libraries. Absolutely, get it back at the first opportunity. Someone who did not return Tolkien's Letters cannot be trusted!!!

Hee, I had to go over to her place tonight and I got my Letters back!

I already got my Letters back (AND all the LoTR DVDs I'd loaned her!) and she's almost done with The Road so I will have it back soon! Lying rules!

OOh. She'd better be a responsible book-lendee at least!

I sort of have to jog her memory to get her to be responsible. The thing is that a lot of people DO pass along books without expecting them back, but not in this case!

She may have given you dinner but you need to camp outside her door and demand that she give THAT back to you, girlfriend!

:)

I got it back tonight. I wouldn't mind her keeping it (I can always buy another) but this was the one with all my stickies and notes in it! That's irreplaceable!

Word.

And imagine this - I am a librarian. It's my job to encourage people to walk off with them...

I haven't had a library card in years just because I hate giving books back. I remember when I finally started having enough money to buy my own books. What a pleasure.
