Totally random thought:

I was in Times Square the other day and, on the corner of 8th Avenue and 42nd Street, saw possibly the biggest billboard I've ever seen, for the Discovery Channel's excellent documentary series, Deadliest Catch. It covered the sides of two buildings and was more than ten stories high.

Do you think these Alaskan crab-boat captains ever, in their wildest dreams, imagined they'd one day be looming ten stories high over Times Square?

We live in an age of wonders.

Oh I hate to talk about it but actually it's not 'one day' but in the past. In the pre-historic times they might be that big.

But at that time, there was no crab-boat captain, eh?

I meant "one day" as in "when they first started working on a crab boat, did they ever think it would lead to being celebrities." Because it's hardly a glamorous occupation and now these four scruffy guys have got the biggest freaking billboard in Times Square! It's a riot!

If I'm not mistaken, someone once posted a huge pic of Dean as part of the promotional campaign for SPN last year. I think it was at Times Square and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a manip. Did you see that?

If it was up there, I missed it. I don't make it up to Times Square all that often and I think they change the advertising pretty frequently. I know that an SPN promo ran on the big video screen just before Season 3 began, but I don't think the show had a billboard. Bummer, because I wouldn't mind seeing ten-story Winchesters.

Someone I went to high school with lives in Alaska and works at a place that supplies the very fishing boats and their captains starring in this series. He knows all these guys. What a strange and small world!

And a very, very large billboard. :)

How weird! Do the guys ever talk about what a strange turn their lives have taken with this series?

I wish I had a camera phone so I could have taken a picture of that billboard. It's literally the biggest thing I've ever seen in Times Square.

I highly doubt they ever thought it would come to this; however, I am very glad it has (because I freaking LOVE that show!). Age of wonders, indeed!

That show is one of the wildest things on television. I cannot BELIEVE what these guys have to endure and yet somehow it all looks kind of...fun. I'm sure that not one of those guys would trade in their profession for a safer one, even without the newfound celebrity status. It sure isn't for everyone but wow. What a job.

I did watch that show recently because they're pushing it so hard I was curious. It left me wondering how they've managed to keep it going for over 4 years. How much can there be to know about life on the crab circuit? Maybe I'll try another episode to see if it gets more interesting. [I sure wish I hadn't seen the poor crabs all spread-eagled and heading into the machine that was about to cut off their legs, though. :(( ]

It doesn't get more interesting. It's always the same. Which somehow, is why I find it so fascinating. It's also the appeal of watching people not work in a fucking office. For all the brutal conditions, they all seem to love their job. Far out.
