Couldn't Help Myself
Nov. 18th, 2008 09:54 pmIf you've known me for even a little while you should have seen this one coming. Sort of in the same 'verse as Those Funny Stories...I said couldn't write another story in that 'verse until the boys themselves gave me more fodder and they do not disappoint, do they? Written on the fly and probably not one of my best, unbeta'd but...how could I resist?
Title: Three Dog Night
Pairings: Jensen/Jared
Rating: RPS, PG-13
Spoilers: None
Word Count: 950
Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. No TV stars or dogs were harmed in the writing of this story.
Summary: Jensen sleeps with dogs. Jared enjoys the show.
Mood-Killing Dedication: For my dog, Daisy (see icon) who passed away two years ago tonight.
Jensen had gone upstairs an hour before the game ended and now the game was over and everyone else had left, pissing and moaning about how only in Vancouver could it already be snowing in October. Jared was collecting the empty beer bottles when he realized he hadn't seen the dogs for a while and he thought shit and went upstairs and Jensen's door was open and he thought shit again. He could hear the dogs snoring from down the hall.
He went and stood in the doorway of Jensen's room and he stood there for a while grinning because the dogs who weren't supposed to be there were in there and were sprawled out over Jensen, all three of them fast asleep.
Oh, that's just... he thought. That's one for the books. He went downstairs and got his cell and went back upstairs and snapped their picture, the three of them in a pile. Sadie in front, Harley in back, Jensen in the middle.
When Jared snapped the picture Jensen lifted his head and blinked at Jared and Jared said, "Hey, dawg."
"Game over?"
"Yeah."
"Shit. Who won?"
"Jets."
"Shit," Jensen said and put his head back down and closed his eyes and Sadie shoved her muzzle back under his chin with a smack of her lips. "The guys left?"
"Yeah."
"Dude, I just couldn't keep my eyes open."
"Yeah, I know. I told them you old guys gotta turn in early. They understood."
"Mmm. Thanks for that."
"You got it." Jared sat down on the bed and scratched Sadie behind the ears.
"Your frigging dogs, man," Jensen said. "Couldn't get em off me."
"Hey, you left the door open."
"Hmph," Jensen said and Sadie snorted and Harley harrumphed and Jared reached over and patted Harley on the flank.
"Yeah, you're a good boy, aren't you? You're a good boy." He went and sat behind Harley and put his arm around him and rubbed his belly and Harley sighed and thumped his tail. Harley was tucked up against Jensen's back and so while Jared was rubbing Harley's belly the back of his hand was stroking the small of Jensen's back and the soft fur of Harley's stomach flowed against his palm and the warmth of Jensen's back whispered over his knuckles. Harley shifted and Jensen shifted and Jensen's t-shirt rode up enough for the back of Jared's hand to be against Jensen's bare skin.
"Love that," Jensen said and Jared paused.
"What?"
"He loves that," Jensen said.
"Yeah," Jared said. "Yeah, he does." He smiled but felt a strange sadness as if what he thought he'd heard was what he'd really wanted to hear. But that couldn't be right. He shook it off and stood up.
"Jen, I'm going to bed. You want me to get these guys outta here?"
"Nah, they can stay," he said and he rolled over as much as the dogs would let him and looked up at Jared and smiled. He glanced at the snowy window and then back at Jared and said, "Three dog night, man."
Jared looked down at Jensen lying there between his two dogs and he wanted to stay. He wanted to stay and he thought about settling in behind Jensen with his arm around him and Jensen tucked back against him, just the two of them. Sleeping like that.
Jared grinned and leaned over and said, "Don't smother my costar. I need this job." He gave Sadie a rough tussle on the head and cuffed Harley's nose and lastly gave Jensen a big scratch behind the ear and Jensen grinned and panted and twitched his leg and Jared laughed and left the three of them there.

Jensen came downstairs the next morning with the dogs on his heels and his t-shirt covered in dog hair and Jared opened the back door to let the dogs out and Jensen sat at the table.
"Sleep okay?" Jared said.
"Dude, the farting...the snoring."
"Yeah, I don't know how the dogs put up with it. That's like...animal cruelty."
"Funny," Jared said and dumped sugar in his coffee and stirred it with his finger and drank it.
"I'll keep them in my room tonight," Jared said.
"It's okay," Jensen said. He looked up at Jared, puffy-faced and still half asleep. "It was kind of nice."
"Yeah," Jared said. He thought about Jensen in bed and Jensen's bare back against his hand and Jensen saying love that which he hadn't even said but Jared thought about it all the same and wondered if maybe he had said it after all.
Jensen looked at him from under his eyebrows, half a smile forming on his mouth and Jared said, "What?"
"This is gonna be one of your stories, isn't it?"
"What stories?"
"One of those stories you like to tell so that fifty million screaming fangirls can spread it around the globe."
"Jen. I'm hurt. An intimate, beautiful moment between you and...two members of another species and you think I'm just gonna put that out there for complete strangers to..."
"You're gonna do it, aren't you?"
"Oh yeah," he said and Jensen shook his head and drank his coffee and grinned and said, "Douche."
Jared laughed and got up and let the dogs back in. Jensen went upstairs to take a shower and when he was gone Jared got his cell and pulled up the picture he'd taken last night.
"Three dog night," he said to himself and he sat there and looked at the picture until he heard the shower turn off and then he closed the phone and stood up and put out the dogs' breakfast.
A/N: Since I have some international readers, the expression "three dog night" refers to a night so cold that you need to sleep with three dogs to keep you warm. Three Dog Night is also a Seventies-era rock band most well known for the song "Joy To The World." Their song "Shambhala" was also featured in SPN 2:02 "Everybody Loves A Clown" -- it's playing on the radio while Dean's fixing the Impala at the beginning of the episode.

Date: 2008-11-20 12:19 am (UTC)Daisy would approve, I think, what with two of the characters being of the canine persuasion. :)

Date: 2008-11-20 05:55 am (UTC)I don't know much about dogs but they HAVE to love, REALLY LOVE Jensen, right, for them to sleep with him like that. I mean, Jensen's not their master and all. And JARED WANTS THE WORLD TO KNOW THAT!!!

Date: 2008-11-20 11:03 am (UTC)Your enthusiasm for this series (*cough* and its stars) is so catching I've started to watch it starting from the first series. Somehow it had passed me by the first time around. Am now hooked.
Two years? I miss hearing about Daisy too.

I knew Jared would have to say it, and it still cracked me up.
My daughter and I share SpN love, and she's converted her son and his fiancee into fans too.

Glad you enjoyed the story!
