Man, I have to tell you that if LJ really does go belly-up my life will be impoverished in ways that I can't bear to think about. If I can't come here to get away from my actual life...where will I go?

To be perfectly honest, I'm amazed it hasn't happened already. This place never made it big a la Facebook or MySpace and I'm willing to bet it barely turns a profit. Do you think they're making much money off these $19.95-a-year paid accounts when you don't even NEED a paid account to post here? And what with all the porn and wank and porny wank and general hardcore geekery that goes on here, I'd wager LJ has always been more trouble than it's ever been worth to its various owners.

If this happens, it will be such a blow to fandom -- I mean to all fandoms. To the very idea of fandom. I don't know of any other single place where fandom in all its expressions flourishes the way it does here.

*feels a cold wind blowing*

What's going on? What's got everyone in such freak out mode? I didn't see anything about lj going under? Is it because I'm one of those freeloaders that doesn't have a paid account?

They just fired a lot of people. Basically they've figured out that lj doesn't make anybody money. Advertisers want nothing to do with us.

But apparently so did Adobe--they fired something like 700 and people and they're doing better than ever. They fired them just in case.

Ooh, that would be awful for fandom :-( - I hope LJ sticks around.

I agree. ::sigh:: I can't imagine where and how we'd all regroup.

I'll stay optimistic. If all else fails, maybe LJ will take in advertising. I for one would not object to those little one-phrase Google-links next to my free-loadin' entries.

*sigh* looking forward to "classmates" banners.

I hadn't thought about it like that but you're probably very, very right.

I don't want to lose lj, I like it here way too much!

Oh dear. I don't get here to visit very often since my eeeevol employer blocked a shitload of sites. But I would be devastated if LJ went away. It's my last remaining link to the glory days of the Harem.

They fired the entire design team. That doesn't bode well :( But I'm actively trying to block out all thoughts of losing LJ (along with a good portion of the internet, as I fear will happen), because God, I'd feel so... isolated. Alone with my ideas, opinions and dreams. Like I felt before I chanced upon your LJ, one afternoon in 2003.

Well, cocksucker that is some bad news. I'm hoping they just figure they can get Russians to run the site for a fraction of the price.
