I've only seen it on LJ as well, but apparently Jim Beaver's myspace has something about him being in mourning for Kim. Apparently he was only diagnosed after the first ep of this season.
Heartbreaking stuff. I am sure Kim's family and all of the Supernatural family are devastated.
IMDB says that he directed this week's episode, so he must have still been able to work up until quite recently. I've always heard that lung cancer is very fast-moving, but Jesus that was quick.
I realize he's not exactly a household name but I thought there'd be a mention of this on more mainstream news outlets. But I guess if it was up on Jim Beaver's Facebook then it must be true.
Really, really sad, for all of his loved ones and the industry and for SPN fans too. I'm sure that this will affect the quality of the show.
I'm really saddened by this news. First of all, for his family and friends and everyone who worked on Supernatural. But also because I think this is going to carve a huge hole in the series.

How horrible, I wasn't aware he was ill.
