I don't have too much to say about this one...I thought it was sad. I thought it was sad that Adam really was their brother and that they never knew about him until it was too late. I thought it was quite well-written -- I especially enjoyed Dean's transition from shocked resentment ("He took you to a baseball game!?") to protectiveness and not wanting Adam to turn out like them. And it was also sad to see Sam turning into John and plowing right into making those same mistakes...and Dean finally realizing that Sam was, and had always been, just like their father (something a lot of fans figured out years ago, heh!).

Of course...all this angst over the life of a hunter does seem strangely incongruous with what Sera Gamble had to say about it just a few episodes ago...you know, like, how cool it is with the classic cars and the fornicating and the kicking ass and all that. Doesn't it? I mean gosh, given how awesome it all is isn't Sam just whining when he says that the Winchesters are "cursed?" And what was up with all Sam's whining about how being a hunter means you can't have any connections to anyone or anything approaching a real life? Gee, why doesn't an angel show up to tell Sam to get over it and quit bellyaching and realize how neat his life is? Hmmm?

I also have to marvel that mere ghouls are apparently more powerful than Lilith herself because they certainly got the jump on New and Improved Sammy a lot better than she did. Here you've got a guy who can exorcize and kill demons with his mind but he can't get out of a few restraints?

Dean of course looked hot. He looked especially hot shooting the ghouls under the car while wearing his fake FBI suit-and-trenchcoat combo and he was wonderfully hot punching out that window and then pulling himself up through it and he was smokin' hot beating that ghoul's head in and of course he looked super-hot with that split lip there at the end. Oh Dean, when it comes to photogenic injuries, you will always be the king.

Loved the last lines too:

Dean: "You were more like him than I will ever be."

Sam: "I take that as a compliment."

Dean (long pause): "You can take it any way you want it."

Oh...the volumes of unspoken man-pain. Mmmm, so good.

That was extremely creepy. I'm not sure what we're supposed to make of Dean saying Adam was "in a better place" when Tessa told us a few eps ago that exactly that comment was nothing but a big lie that humans tell each other to make themselves feel better. Hmm...do the writers actually read each other's scripts??

I kind of thought Dean was using those exact words, knowing they were meaningless, to placate Sam (as he did with Pamela in 4.15). Not because he really believed them. But that may be giving the writers too much credit.

Either that, or it's a return of some version of death wish!Dean--any kind of permanent death is going to be better than what they have to deal with. (made me think of Adam=man of earth: returning to earth, as opposed to poor old SamnDean).

Again, the writers probably just needed a platitude.

Probably he was. He didn't particularly look like he believed it, although I'd wager he'd consider Adam's fate better than being supernaturally brought back to life like both he and Sam have been. What's dead should stay dead, after all.

I could totally be reading into it (like I usually do) but when he said Adam was "in a better place," I didn't read that as like, "in Heaven," I read that as, "pretty much any place is better than this." You know, having a life sucks hard and the whole world blows moment.

But it's possible that I just wanted Dean to be sad and emo so that I could like... snuggle him, or something.

He really was just ridiculously hot climbing up out of that lair, wasn't he?

It's a little jarring to get a MOTW episode in the midst of everything else that's going on this season, but I liked it. I had to laugh at the rock-scissors-paper throw. Dean lost...again. :-D

I'm just glad it wasn't funny. Given the title and what I knew about it, I thought it would be kind of slapsticky but it wasn't at all. Thank goodness because it's far too late in the season for that nonsense.

HELL YEAH, Been kinda freaked by some of the negative comments... this hits it right in the head - LovedSammy taking the older bro role with Adam while Dean was still holding out... and guh, Dean in trenchcoat OMG! that's all I have to say about that. Although I did just get a bit of a different hit about the Zach scene... I think it wasn't so much that the PTB (SG in particulsr) thought that Dean should just get over it - but it was written as a way to express that that was how Zacheriah felt. To reinforce the concept that the angels are pretty out of touch with how humans (and Dean in particular) look at the world - even Castiel was pretty non-sympathetic at first (I can send you back...) before he got to know Dean, so maybe there is a learning curve for the angels too, because they don't seem to know how to deal with emotions and just expect obedience the way they are expected to obey God without hesitation so have no tolerance when humans don't just perform? IDK for sure - but it could explain some of the incongruous stuff in a couple eps.

I was giving the writers the benefit of the doubt about that scene, but now that two episodes have elapsed since then and Gamble herself was quoted as saying that 4:17 was "a shot in the arm" for Dean, I think it's safe to say that Zach's pep-talk was meant to be taken at nothing more than face value. Anything else is just hopeful fanwank. The writers dug themselves into a huge hole in 4:16 by emotionally gutting Dean and then they had to do a quick and sloppy patch-up to keep the season on track...and now they're just going to pretend the implications of that scene don't exist. Bad writers. No biscuit.

The kids would NOT go to bed, so I only saw the last half hour (in time for the hotness of Dean pulling himself up through the skylight, not in time for the trench coat-wearing shooting, sadly). Will have to get it from itunes tomorrow night...

I got there in time for Sam's creepy discussion of using Adam as bait, though--made me think of Something Wicked, which (to my mind) leaves the whole question of John using the boys as bait hanging...

I kept thinking the ghouls (another brother and sister!) would be poisoned by Sam's blood--and yeah, was a little surprised he couldn't get free.

And was also puzzled by Dean's OTT bashing of the ghoul/brother's head--but I'll understand when I see the whole ep., I'm sure--

And, yeah, the ending was really sad--

Yes, yes and yes. So many varying outlooks on the ep and all seem to be on the nose. I loved the last lines too - not sure how I want to interpret and process that yet...
