What He Said
Jun. 2nd, 2009 09:33 pmI've been looking for that one, perfect post to sum up exactly how I feel about the assassination of Dr. George Tiller by a homegrown terrorist, and as usual, John Cole at Balloon Juice brings it.
What this country really needs right now is a serious case of mind your own damned business.
While I can't agree with Cole about liking Andrew Sullivan, I'm on board with everything else he says here. It has left me speechless that anyone dares to think their "conscience" should allow them to force a woman to bring a hopelessly deformed fetus to term or to make any sort of deeply personal medical decisions for anyone else, while the very same conscience apparently doesn't extend to offering any other sort of support -- especially financial -- to people in such difficult circumstances. Although nothing would make it all right for the likes of Andrew Sullivan to force his opinion on anyone else, he (along with Bill O'Reilly and Randall Terry and all their conscientious cohorts) would be a little less repulsive if he was visibly supporting children and families in need instead of blowing hot air and helping to create an environment that got a man murdered.
The right wing, including the mainstream media as represented by Fox News, painted a compassionate and courageous caregiver as a rampaging serial killer who deserved to be taken out by any means necessary. I'd say that the terrorist was a member of the lunatic fringe but his opinions and no doubt his mental state received a great deal of encouragement and validation from a 24-hour news network owned by one of the biggest media companies in the world, not to mention numerous mainstream columnists and talk-show hosts -- and that can hardly be described as the "fringe."
Disabling comments because I absolutely do not want to engage in any discussion about this issue. You are welcome to exercise your right to unfriend me if you feel the need to do so.
