I don't really know what to say about this week's episode. I laughed a lot at all the show parodies and I'm sure everyone involved had a fun time making this one. My own personal favorite moment was Jensen doing the medical side-effects voiceover on the herpes commercial. His voice is just far, far too sexy for warnings about diarrhea. I mean, he almost makes it sound like something you'd want to get. Ooh, baby...diarrheaaaaaahh...
But it seems like every single episode since "The End" (including next week's offering) has been kind of gimmicky and jokey. Sure they try to slip in some serious stuff, but it gets buried under all the yuks. What stood out about this week's episode? The serious part about Gabriel or the riffs on Grey's Anatomy and CSI? What stood out about last week's episode besides Old!Dean is funny? And then before that we had Paris Hilton, and whoopee cushions and next week we've got some self-referential tomfoolery about fandom, which I may skip altogether because you know how I feel about that stuff.
They usually slip in at least a couple of funny episodes per season but next week's episode will mark a string of 5 episodes since "The End" that have either been completely or partially silly. And the "serious" parts of these episodes haven't even been working for me...the Trickster was really the angel Gabriel all along? Bzuh? Sam and Dean were "always" meant to be Lucifer and Michael's vessels? Double-bzuh? What about Azazel and the psychic kids contest? What was the point of all that if Sam was "always" the one? And wasn't Azazel supposed to be Lucifer's enemy? Or was he on Lucifer's side? Or does it even matter? Did it ever matter?
Seriously (no pun intended), I want them to quit fooling around. I like my laffs just as much as the next gal but you can't give us something like "The End" and then crank out 5 consecutive episodes that feel more like crackfic than the show. Unless they're getting all the hilarity out of the way so we can get down to business in the latter half of the season. That would be cool.
ETA: Okay, I did laugh at the "prettyboy angel" crack. Who couldn't?

Date: 2009-11-08 04:40 am (UTC)Yes, exactly. Plus I feel like they're acting like this is definitely their last season (even though I'm sure that Season 6 is a pretty safe bet) and they're doing whatever the heck they want, i.e., just having a good time. Which is fine, I have nothing against having a good time but it makes it look like the Winchesters are just goofing around while the world burns, or is about to burn and it doesn't make any sense at all.

I know I'm really in the minority over how much this bothers me -- most other fans seem to feel like the show's depiction of fandom is very good natured and we're all in on the joke, and I think some fans even see it as a tribute of sorts, but it always rubs me the wrong way. Plus I just hate this breaking-the-fourth-wall bullshit altogether.

Date: 2009-11-08 10:29 pm (UTC)You know I get the feeling that The End was so epic and awesome and took so much out of the writers that they were totally punch drunk in the writers' room when they came up with this latest batch of episodes. Like you, I hope this where they get their jollies out for the rest of the season and get back to the srs bzns of the apoklips for the rest of the year.
I actually haven't minded the meta too, too much until now mostly because I think some segments of this fandom are so ridiculously entitled that it doesn't bug me if Kripke wants to thwat them gently on the nose with a newspaper. But I do admit that I am extremely nervous about next week's episode and I've never even been to a convention.
But I do admit that I am deeply amused at how butthurt TWoP Demian already seems to be, that his namesake is being portrayed as an overweight lout. That might make all the rest of the possible cringing, worth it for me.
Petty? Who me? *snerk*
