For all you H/C nuts out there

One of my favorite bloggers, John Cole at Balloon Juice slipped on some ice while walking his dog and tore up his shoulder really badly. I read with horrified fascination about how he used his own front doorknob to pop his dislocated shoulder back into place and I thought, That is one tough bastard, and of course also thought of Dean Winchester for whom the dislocated shoulder is the No. 1 fanfiction malady (and it's canon, too!). Of course, life being nothing like fanfiction or television, Cole's real-life shoulder, unlike Dean's invincible one, kept popping back out of place and it turns out the shoulder was so wrecked he had to have two hours of surgery to put it back together. Ouch.

Anyway, because any horrific injury can -- and of course, should -- be put in the service of fanfiction, I thought I'd tell you about this incredible device that Cole was fitted with after the surgery. I'd never heard of such a thing -- it actually connects via hoses to a cooler full of ice water that is then circulated throughout the shoulder pad to reduce swelling. Seems hideously cumbersome and uncomfortable and so perfect for all your h/c needs and so I'm sharing it with all you who, like me, enjoy beating the shit out of Dean Winchester for no explicable reason except that Dean would look hot even with ice-water hoses running out of his arm. Enjoy.

Remember that guy who got his arm stuck in a boulder and then cut off his own hand so he could escape?? That guy was totally badass.

I'm dying here, because I won't be able to read your fic until this weekend, when I can set aside more than a few minutes and really enjoy it. Only 2 more days! :)

I actually have one of these, got it after my knee surgery to repair torn cartilage. It's both awesome and annoying, once you're hooked up it's best to just sit/lay somewhere and not move. The cooler also needs to be filled with ice, but I kept it on all night and the water was still cool in the morning. It did feel really nice, but the original after surgery bandage job was done so tightly by the nurse it left octopus-like deep impressions in my leg--my ortho. nurse at the doctor's office was horrified... They did eventually go away, glad to report.
