Okay, who's bawling?

Cuz I'M bawling.

Between blubbers let me just say I KNEW Mary was already going to be pregnant. As soon as I saw that it was 1978, I thought "Wait, wasn't Dean born in January 1979? So that would probably mean...."

BAWLING.

And I don't know if I just feel this way because it was such a good episode but...Jensen was just STUNNING tonight. I mean...just....ajfio;ewaf/;awjio

Fuckin' show. Pick a mood, you bipolar bastard. Either suck all the time, or be this good all the time. Quit fuckin with me. Or take yer fuckin Lithium. Or something. Or...oh show! C'mere baby, I love you!!!

I can excuse the first scene because it was just a dream sequence...whatever. A little cheese? I don't care. But this is all I ask -- for the show to take itself seriously, to not wank itself off, and not to talk down to or mock the audience. Jeez, is that so much to expect?

One of the media industry sites I subscribe to at work reports the overnight ratings every day, and sadly, SPN tends to lose a fair bit of Vampire Diaries' audience...maybe if they had more good episodes like this one, it wouldn't.

I have really strong opinions about how humor can be used in a show like this. There were some moments of comic relief in this episode that were nicely done and in-character, but when they start going in for the slapstick stuff or fapping themselves off at the audience, it's not funny, it's just annoying. It's like being the only sober person in a roomful of drunks cracking themselves up.

I don't care how many writers they farm the scripts out to...the ultimate responsibility rests with Kripke and Executive Producers like Sera Gamble. I'm sure they have a lot on their plates but giving a serious review to every single script should be their number one priority. And IMO, both Kripke and Gamble have been responsible for a fair number of mediocre episodes that they wrote all on their own.

One thing of many that bugs me about the meta humor is I feel like it's sooo cheap. Yes it can be brilliant if you do something really special with it. But they haven't gotten anywhere near the last episode of Newhart here. It's more like they just turn around and point at fandom and count on people laughing because OMG, that's us! It's not really humor, it's just making people giggle and feel noticed.
From: [identity profile] oselle.livejournal.com
Meta humor is brilliant when used in exquisitely tiny moderation -- like the Newhart example you cited, which was unexpected, pointed and totally hilarious. SPN has just gone overboard with it and it's a big bloated, unfunny mess that's clearly being done for their own amusement. Yes, there's a little corner of fandom that gets off on it as well, but why pander to those people, especially to the detriment of your own show?

I thought this episode was awesome. For me it redeemed them from last weeks mess.
This was very powerful. I'm going to have to watch this one again.

Okay, this plus "The End" and "Abandon All Hope" makes for three great episodes so far this year.

Damn. I'm still all wibbly over that scene. Jensen is amazing, and so was the chick who played Mary.

::sigh:: Yeah.

I think everyone brought their A-game to this one. John and Sam were awesome too. Anna, Castiel, everyone. Great writing, just the right amounts of humor ("Those movies haven't even been made yet!")...excellent. A+++

Fuckin' show. Pick a mood, you bipolar bastard. EXACTLY. I mean, why can't *every* ep be like this one or "The End" or "Changing Channels"? Gives me whiplash, I tell ya.

Michael was just. Wow. Did not see that coming AT ALL.

I didn't care for "Changing Channels" all that much -- cute performances from Jared and Jensen but on the whole, way too slapsticky for me, did nothing to advance the plot, and I still don't buy into the idea that the Trickster has been Gabriel this whole time -- simply does not jive with any of his previous functions in the show.

Michael-as-John was phenomenal, and like you, I didn't see it coming. It's nice when the show can surprise me, and not in a stupid "Gotcha!" kind of way.

It really is amazing to think they want to do all that meta humor when they can do scenes with Dean and Mary just looking at each other.

Sorry to sneak in but I just have to underline this: they can do scenes with Dean and Mary just looking at each other.

Yeah. That chemistry goes beyond SamDean's.

Date: 2010-02-05 08:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] oselle.livejournal.com
And builds on my conviction that the series will end with Dean happily married and Sam off hunting on his own. This is really what I want for Dean when it's all over -- a little bit of happiness and peace.

From: [identity profile] oselle.livejournal.com
God, yes. You really have to wonder why they waste so much time on all that other crap when they can pull off stuff like this -- that actually means something and that adds to, rather than detracts from, the richness of the show.

So I would now like a future!Dean and Cas spin-off, a past!Mary and Dean spin-off and perhaps a John!Michael and Dean spin-off.

Also Jensen is just ridiculously pretty as are young Mary and John.

I found young John exceptionally attractive in this episode, more so than in "In The Beginning." You can really believe that Sam and Dean came out of this gene pool.

Jensen was simply stunning from start to finish in this episode. I haven't seen him looking so exquisite in a long time. He gets a softness to his face when he's doing emotional scenes that really enhances his physical loveliness.

I totally agree, I'll get totally fed up with the show and just watch to watch Dean/Jensen and then it'll suck me back in and I'm there buying in all over again.
I could watch Jensen for hours. Love his face, his timing, his character. The angel on the shelf at the end, killed.

I feel like Jensen has had so little material to work with this season, and it was just wonderful to see him in an episode that puts both his exceptional talent and stunning good looks to work.

I wasn't caught by surprise by Mary's pregnancy either, though it did give me a lurch or two when Mary was tossed around so much. That can't be good for a fetus! Or, you know, Mary but she seems like a tough lady and shrugged it off easily enough.

It was a very good episode. A little disappointing with Michael and in a few other aspects, but still very good. Why they have episodes like this and then fall over themselves with trash like Fallen Idols or TRG is beyond me.

Episodes like this build me up into believing that Season 6 will not suck...and yet make me a little angry at the same time. If SPN is capable of such quality, why do they so often choose to go the route of dreck?

The writers are indeed bipolar. It's like they have these two sets of writers - or maybe two mindsets - one is to bore the fans to death, and one is to kill and bring them heavenwards.

/is totally slayed by last night's episode.

I wonder why some shows can attain a consistent level of excellence and SPN can't. ALL shows have "off" episodes, SPN has more episodes that are "off" than "on." Why?

Only for this season though. Season 5 has more duds compared to the first three seasons combined! I love all of season 1, only had problem with 'No Exit' in season 2, love 85% of season 3. But having said that, the best episodes from s1-5, for me, are from this season!

I've heard some people say that S3 was, overall, the worst of the series but it did contain two of my all-time favorite episodes: my sentimental favorite, "A Very Supernatural Christmas," and the exquisite "Mystery Spot." S4 was brilliant up until "Yellow Fever" and then it just seemed to bottom out, with mid-season episodes that should have been great (like "Heaven and Hell") really falling flat for me. So far this season, only "The End," "Abandon All Hope," and this week's "Song Remains The Same" have been outstanding. And when the show is bad, it's truly awful: "Red Sky at Morning," "The Real Ghostbusters," "Yellow Fever," et al.
