I really wish that when Sam wondered how Dean knew so much about diapers etc., Dean had asked Sam who he thought used to change his diapers. Because come on...you know Dean must have.

Me too! I imagined that it was on the tip of his tongue, but he decided not to say it. Like when he was saying that he wanted to raise Ben differently, I imagined his thinking different from how he raised Sam.

He should've said it. Nothing puts a pesky younger sibling in their place like reminding them you used to wipe their ass.

The "sink or swim" was TOTALLY about Sam and I refuse to believe anything else.

I know I was like,oh Sam, unless you were potty trained at 6 months, Dean was changing your diapers.. I was waiting for Dean to say that. It would have made a great scene.

Well Sam was a "special" child. Maybe with all that demon blood in him he WAS potty trained at 6 months!

That's totally what I expected him to say. I mean...is this even a question? of course Dean changed Sam's diapers all the time!

It was such a missed opportunity. I can't believe they didn't go for it. The writer of this episode was new and maybe he doesn't know the family history all that well. It seemed kind of ridiculous to introduce the idea of Lisa's baby niece when WE ALL KNOW that Dean must have changed Sam's diapers and I'd imagine it's like riding a bike -- you never forget how to do it.

GOD YES, the baby niece made me honestly say "what?!" at the screen.

I was literally on the edge of my seat for Dean to remind Sam that he'd changed his diapers for years and then...nada. Sigh.

After reading your brilliant comment on Janissa's journal, I decided to come over and see what you wrote about it. Hope you don't mind...and this comment here, just, YES. Finally found someone who sees it my way. Mostly I've been told that adult Dean isn't as comfortable with babies as he was taking care of Sam and that John probably did all the diaper changing since Dean was so young.

I think I choose to agree with you, he surely must have!

I've seen some back-and-forth about this but a four years' age difference is a big one, and the canon is pretty clear that John was pretty out to lunch on the parental duties after Mary died. Unless John was springing for babysitters, there really wouldn't have been anyone to change Sam's diapers except Dean.

Oh god, the whole episode I was screaming, waiting for some tiny acknowledgement of the fact that Dean probably changed Sam's diapers, put him to bed and taught the kid to brush his goddamn teeth for fucks sake.

But oh no, I can just see Sera et al creaming their pants in the writers room about their hilarious ideas for Sam and Dean having no idea of what to do with a baby. How amazing this will be! How hilarious! Why ever would we need to worry about the canon established as far back as the pilot?! We are so freakin' clever!

I am normally pretty easy going on SPN, don't get to cranky but this is the first time I am getting very, very angry at the show. Jensen's performance each week really, really is the only reason I am tuning in (I tuned in to Dark Angel to watch him no less).

The Campbells are horrid - totally flat notes on the screen. Jared is not talented enough to add even the slightest bit of nuance to this shitty writing, obviously they're trying to indicate something mysteriously off about him but haven't bothered following that through properly.

God, I can't even articulate my frustration properly. Urgh. Basically just take your posts and put a sign underneath "What she said."

At least Jensen's jeans were better this episode and the shirts weren't tucked in.

I actually thought the Dean/Ben situation would be the worst part of the show, but I would prefer that to any Dean/Grandpa scenes at all.

"What she said", (although a- I don't know how to put an arrow in this LJ thing... and b-I'm not sure if I should put the period in or outside the quotation marks!?) JOKING! I agree totally w/u andycake

Yes, this sounds just like them. The canon fact that Dean raised Sam has (for me) been one of the most compelling things about the whole Winchester family saga and yet they constantly forget it when they need to. Remember last season, when we found out that the boys had a babysitter (just because they needed a reason to have Sam and Dean back in the former babysitter's home town)? At a time when Sam would have been twelve and Dean sixteen? They would have been out hunting with Dad at those ages, not watching TV with a babysitter.

Okay, I have a question for you. When the boys brought the baby to Gramps' lair, the Corin Nemic character said he's heard that Dean had been a torturer of souls in hell. How did he know that? Why do you think Sam would have told them that?

Because Sam is a douchebag full of himself and his own stupid needs - and let me tell you Lucy couldn't have chosen anyone better to fill in as he was already half way there.Dean's pleasures are mostly venial (xcept gluttony, but again, he said he had really suffered from hunger...)
Sam's are all capital sins (a.k.a deadly sins).
I'm sorry I don't want to antagonize anybody (and of course I have nothing against the delectable Jared) but Sam's behaving like ... *self censored*

Because Sam is a douchebag full of himself and his own stupid needs

The funny thing is I can totally see Sam sharing that secret with the Campbells to fulfill one of his own stupid needs. Either the need to make himself look better than Dean (because he never cracked in hell the way Dean did) or because he inexplicably wanted to ingratiate himself with the Campbells by sharing an intimacy (about someone else) with them. I'm sure Sam's sharing-with-the-family moment didn't involve disclosing any of his own dirty demon-screwing, blood-drinking secrets.

There has been much speculation as to why Sam would share such a personal secret with the icky Campbells but I subscribe to [livejournal.com profile] cryptonomicon63's theory: Sam is a douchebag. A thoughtless douchebag with little to no respect for Dean.

WORD! I was dying for that too (though you noticed Sam barely laid a finger on that baby after Dean showed up)

I heard someone say that Sam looked "devastated" that Dean didn't mention how he'd taken care of Sam when Sam asked how he knew about all that baby stuff...what an odd interpretation! I don't think Sam even recalls that Dean took care of him, and if he does, he just takes it for granted that that was Dean's job, just as caring for this baby was also apparently Dean's job since Dean was the first person Sam thought of when he needed baby help.

And there we go, and there we go. Exactly my point and opinion. And after 6.03 I hate him more than ever!!
I was reconciling myself to the season for almost the whole epi(thank gosh no Campbells) and at the end he just goes and says such a hurtful, despicable, hateful and arrogant thing to the man who gave his life and soul so he could live!!!!? I'm speechless and furious! I know, I'm being childish but still...

Um...I was kinda drunk that night. What did Sam say at the end of the episode that was so bad? I remember him saying something about being "different" from Dean but...that's about it.

haha! he said that hell had affected "only" Dean that way, implying that he was weaker and so it had left a permenent and lasting effect on Dean that could and would not in him (who was stronger, by definition...) and then look at his face when he says it- if that's not a smirk of despise à la Campbell... in any case that's in MHO so I guess it's open to interpretation

Dean finally aired his concerns about Sam. I honestly thought it'd take longer than that given the pace last season, which at times felt extremely dragged on. Instead, Dean took the issue head-on, saying: "…something's different with you, and you know that." Sam brushed it off as natural change. He had been on his own for a year and was "rough around the edges," he told Dean.

Dean: "You went to Hell, Sam. I know what that does to a guy."
Sam: "…to you."
Dean: "What?"
Sam: "You know what it does to you. It tortured you. I think it still does. But Dean, I'm okay."
Dean: "So you're saying what? That you're stronger than me?"
Sam: "No. I'm saying we're different."
