In brief:

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] sistermagpie, you would think that the mother of all the monsters who ever lived wouldn't consider it quite so important for her earthly vessel to have an intact hymen. But this show never can pass up a good virgin joke, which of course is more important than crafting or casting a believable villain, especially a female one. Either that or I guess the writers were channel surfing one day and decided their One Bad Muthah should look like she'd just jumped ship from the Pretty Little Liars set.

Someone ([livejournal.com profile] sistermagpie again?) made a comment on my LJ at the beginning of this season that she thought it was so funny how they kept trying to "give" Castiel to Sam. That awkward non-hug had me snorting. When has Castiel ever sought a hug from anyone? Much less Sam?

I do believe that the writers have been trying to create a bond between Castiel and Sam where none has ever existed, but I vastly prefer my my fanfic-writer's theory on the sad non-hug.

Castiel knows that he needs to keep his emotions on a short leash where Dean is concerned because he's so achingly in love with Dean that it's been tearing him up for years. He's already lost his grace once and died -- what? twice? -- for Dean's sake. Not to mention the awful turmoil of his ardor has in the past manifested itself as extreme violence towards the very object of his affection. So Castiel knows he could never, ever hug Dean. Hell, he can hardly look at Dean without appearing close to spontaneous combustion. Therefore, Castiel's perplexing desire to hug Sam was because hugging Sam is as close as he can get to hugging Dean without losing his mind, his grace, and everything. He can hug Dean vicariously through Sam. Sam is "safe" to hug, Dean is not.

YOU KNOW I AM RIGHT.

whew! what a relief that someone can translate that for me. now it makes sense. i can sleep, instead of staying up staring in the dark trying to figure that one out. thank you, wise one, you have cut one strand of that gordian knot this show has become....

now could you just explain why castiel, an angel of the lord, thinks that an empty soulless husk of a body, a revenant wearing the meatsuit of sam, is more worth keeping 'alive' than rescuing the soul of the man who actually faced down lucifer and averted armageddon on earth by sacrificing his body and soul and life...from eternity being tortured in hell...

that one, i will never get...

I will never get it either. That never made any sense, and none of the writers ever made any attempt to address the senselessness of that whole "should we or shouldn't we" debate.

YESSSSSS… I despaired briefly after 6.12. But then had a rethink, helped by a gif of the Dean-Cas spat at the beginning of the episode that an enterprising fan had cut together with no dialog. And if you watch with the volume turned down well: just like you say – spontaneous combustion and such intense eyefucking that if the show were on HBO Dean would have been slamming Cas up against the wall and they would have been ripping each other's clothes off in the next shot. So… add that to Cas coming when Dean prayed to him, and the profound bond, the whisky pouring and "I'd rather be here," with you, Dean and I think the ship is still steaming along nicely without an iceberg in sight.

I'm still hoping for something more obvious [and also hoping for some kind of epiphany to remind the PTB about the canon they themselves established when it comes to Castiel's characterization, which is all over the place so far this season], but until then I'm happily convinced Cas is still all about Dean. And I'm good with him showing concern for Sam as Dean's brother, since he knows how happy Dean will be that Sam is back and safe, and happy that he finds joy in Sam's safe return. And happy that Sam is clearly smart enough to know it's better if he doesn't trespass on his brother's private property! :-D

ETA: sorry, my typing is always godawful when I'm half-cut…

Direct me to this gif at once! I need some inspiration to finish "In Country" and I didn't record this ep so I can't watch it without the audio! At once, I say!

Cas coming when Dean prayed to him

I'm sure Cas always comes when Dean prays to him. Then he zips up and goes to see what Dean wants.

I think that heated gaze says it all. Definitely the prelude to wallslamming, grinding hips, sucking and biting of the neck, choked-out moans and gasping of each other's name. Be inspired. Be very inspired.

I do find it kind of hilarious that the writers seem to be saying that Sam and Castiel are such great friends despite the fact that they barely have any screen time together. I mean I know the writers are biased towards Sam but come on!

When something is working on the show (or at least, when there's something the fans respond well to) the writers tend to take that thing and overuse it until it wears out its welcome or, in this case, they try to transplant it to another situation where it doesn't work so well. The audience responded well to the relationship between Castiel and Dean, which came about very naturally. Now they're trying to artificially transplant it to Sam. It's not going to take. It already hasn't.

Heh! I'll go with that since the show didn't bother to set up any kind of viable motivation for the character so we're free to make it whatever we want.

I have to say that I'm really starting to resent Jensen 'cuz he just Dean so darned charming that I can't quite cut this baby loose. He really needs to start phoning it in so I can make my escape. *sigh*

I know. Jensen needs to throw a tantrum and break his contract. I wish he'd stop being a good boy.

Oh, but I thought throwing tantrums and holding up filming and refusing to come out of one's trailer is what got you kowtowed to and all the story line on this show? What? Or is that just if the showrunner wants to bang you and is producing the show like she's writing fan fiction out of her bedroom?

Yeah, Jensen, please, go spit in Gamble's face or something - get yourself fired so we can all move on with our lives.

I do like your Dean/Castiel explanation. I'll go with that one. What the hell, it's all fan fiction anyway, right? ;)

Oh, and I've seen the Mommy of All called "Gossip Girl" Mommy - but "Pretty Little Liars" Mommy works too. *snort*

Well, she wasn't the showrunner when Jared was having his little meltdown last year, although she probably had a lot of influence. However, I think the decision to give Sam's character more action was based on their realization that they'd sort of dropped the ball on Sam for a long time. I just wish they could figure out a way to give equal time to both brothers.

If Jensen did leave the show, I would too. It's not just that Jensen is so much fun to look at, it's that for me, Dean is really the heart of the show. I just can't imagine being interested in the story if Dean weren't a part of it.

The Mother of All only bores me so far. A lot.
I've been thinking hard about why Castiel would suddenly attempt to hug people and I like your theory. It's cute how he was going all grumpy and irrational on Dean in the first scene. That line about Dean wanting to kill his brother was a low blow.

Castiel is all grumpy because he's just so torn up about loving Dean so very, very much. It tends to make one cranky and emotional.

As for the Mother, I didn't know they'd be introducing ANOTHER Big Bad this season, though I guess I should have seen it coming after the captured vampire said "everything has a mother" or something like that. I remember Sera was all fired up about her "origin of monsters" storyline -- personally, that storyline never interested me much to begin with; it interests me even less now that all of these monsters apparently originated from the same source.

Yes, I just don't care care about monster origins. I liked it well enough when they explored Monster Issues like in Bloodlust, but that's really sufficient? (That it seems to be one source~ is one of those mythology retcons I really don't like much.)
I mostly care about Sam and Dean and how their lifes suck - I'm simple like that.

I actually liked this episode. Thought it was funny, and I really enjoyed Dean trying to get that sword out of the stone. :D

I sort of started off liking it but the business about virgins was annoying and eventually made no sense, and even though I wasn't spoiled for the appearance of a brand new supervillain, I was vastly underwhelmed.
