I could have lived without the "posse" jokes...I know that exchange only went on for a few seconds but it felt endless and only funny in a cringy, embarrassed sort of way. I don't like these two writers much, especially because in almost every episode of theirs, they've written Dean as a goofball. Once in a while is okay, but they've done it in just about every episode except, I think, "Dark Side of the Moon." It's like the producers ring these guys up whenever they want a Silly-Dean episode or something.
The ending was almost a word-for-word ripoff of the ending of Back to the Future Part II, right down to the "This is going to sound crazy, but we've had this package in the office since 1851..." thing. It's just so great that Dabb & Loflin probably scored about $30K for this episode (in addition to whatever else they get) and all they had to do to resolve their plot was plug an old movie into the DVD player and copy it. LOL, where do I get THAT gig? Ahh, to have well-connected friends.
That said, I did enjoy a couple of lines, especially Colt calling Sam "a giant from the future" because OMG, Jared is HUGE. He even made that horse look short. A horse, for God's sake. And Jensen is looking teensier than ever next to him. I'm starting to think they're putting Jared up on the applebox just for laughs. But no applebox could make a horse look short. A horse! He's bigger than a horse!
Actually, Jensen looked small throughout this episode. I think the long duster made him look short, although it did a great job of masquerading the bowlegs. But fuck...after looking kind of haggard last week, I see he was back to his usual state of pretty this week, rendered even prettier by the sepia tone. He looked very Alec to me this week, and he seemed to be enjoying himself a great deal. Pretty fuckin freckled greeneyed basterd.
I guess I should say something about the plot, and whatever Castiel is up to there in heaven, but it seems kind of irrelevant at this point since I'm mostly watching just to stare at freckleface's pretty mug. Yeah, it's true.

Date: 2011-04-23 02:46 pm (UTC)Never saw that movie so I had no idea. I was a little impressed, too, thinking that although it wasn't the sort of OMG-WOW-REALLY?!? twist I've been wanting from this show for a long, long time it was at least... something. It showed potential for surprising us a little here and there.
But like you, I've made my peace and I'm no longer watching for the writing.

Date: 2011-04-23 04:47 pm (UTC)Of course, I feel more invested in Castiel's storyline than Sam and Dean because honestly? I find them both pretty to look at but story-wise, I am SO bored of them now.
Which is kind of sad since it seems like everybody else of my friends' list was tripping out at how great the eps. was.
Me? Not so into Westerns unless it's maybe Black History or something really compelling.

Date: 2011-04-23 07:07 pm (UTC)I think a lot of viewers are just at the point where they'll praise an episode if they can just get a few laughs and a little eye candy out of it, and last night's episode delivered on both points. The show has set the bar pretty low and we've lowered our expectations accordingly.

Date: 2011-04-23 07:03 pm (UTC)It's just a little remarkable that the writers get away with this sort of thing and no one cares. If I were the showrunner I think I'd have told these guys they were getting paid to write an original script, not transcribe someone else's. And then the show has the nerve to make fun of people who write fanfic? There's more originality in good fanfic than there was in that episode last night.
And at this point they could do episodes consisting solely of flashbacks to other episodes and it'd be far preferable to what they've done this season.
I'd watch that!

Date: 2011-04-23 09:33 pm (UTC)But yeah, I thought the ending was weak and unoriginal. But I guess they couldn't pass up the angst of having Dean and Sam fail yet again.
I am kinda interested in what Cas is up to but only if they slather him up with whitwash like they have Sam for so many years and if Dean is as stupidly forgiving with Cas as he is with the rest of his "family"
But yeah, at this point I'm just hanging in their for the pretty since I have zero faith that they will be able to pull it all together by the end of the season when they seem to retcon themselves from one episode to the next.

Date: 2011-04-23 10:58 pm (UTC)Well, I do too, but I think "Dean looking happy" is pretty thin material for an episode, not to mention an entire series. And yet I feel like that's what the writers are aiming for with episodes like this -- they know we've built up such an attachment with these characters and the actors who play them that just throwing us some fanservice, inside jokes or dewy closeups of Jensen is enough. I have to say that the SPN writers and producers have the best goddamn audience in television -- and a damn easy job as a result.
Dean is as stupidly forgiving with Cas
He should be, considering how much Cas is in love with him. I swear, poor Cas is looking more desperately lovelorn with every episode. He not only ran (once again) to Dean's call but he sent Rachel packing for yelling at him and is clearly doing all he can to keep both brothers from finding out what he's up to.

Date: 2011-04-23 11:18 pm (UTC)Well sure. But have people ever really watched this show for the writing? I certainly didn't until season 4, though I do think there were some great individual episodes before then. But I would say 80% of the audience has only ever been in it for the pretty boys and those who actually enjoyed the story are only still here because of one actor or another.

IKR? Poor Cas. The way he gazes so desperately at Dean and then turns away quickly when Dean catches his eye, he's kinda terrified. Also I think Jensen is playing Dean as knowing something really bad is up with Cas but he is in deep, deep denial at the moment. He does not want to know about these regrettable things. Especially not after Sam's flirtation with the dark side.

Date: 2011-04-24 03:27 am (UTC)Maybe not, but once upon a time, it at least seemed to have a little more going for it than just that. Now it feels like that's all there is and the writers know it. I feel kind of...cheap, at this point. They know someone like me is going to tune it just to see Jensen dressed like a gunslinger and they don't have to try any harder than that or even pretend to try.

It's pretty adorable, isn't it?

I can see that. I think Dean can read Castiel pretty well. They do have a profound bond, after all. :)

LOL...recalling "I Know What You Did Last Summer," he did a lot more than flirt with it. WAY more.
