Priorities

Meanwhile, some conservative bloggers are also very busy... criticizing the president's speech. Seems they think it was kind of uppity.

Personally, I'd appreciate it if reporters would stop saying that "It took ten years to find him." It did not take ten years. It took just over two years...dating back to the beginning of Obama's administration. Finding Bin Laden was never a priority for Bush. As early as March 2002, a mere six months after the September 11 attacks, Bush was already saying, "I truly am not that concerned about him." Indeed, I think he was not concerned about him at all. The invasion of a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 was the prime military directive of Bush and his administration. Bin Laden was a potent and convenient boogeyman and I think they liked having him around to fill that role. Any suggestion by Bush that he was actually searching for Bin Laden was nothing but "Dead or Alive!" swinging-dick theatrics for the rubes, who gladly ate it up.

Of course now the national conversation will jump from Obama's "fake" birth certificate to Bin Laden's "fake" corpse. In fact, I expect Donald Trump to weigh in on this within the next couple of days. Then Trump, and others, will be invited on television to be interviewed by so-called journalists as if this is somehow a legitimate and serious topic for debate, while anyone with a brain sits there and facepalms in agony. Years from now, there will still be people in this country who will talk about the "conspiracy" surrounding Bin Laden's death, because they will never be able to accept that it was a Kenyan Muslim Marxist jiggaboo who took Bin Laden out, not their beloved "Mission Accomplished" flight-suit cowboy, "Mama Grizzly" Palin, or any one of a host of tough-talkin', gun-slingin' real Americans.

I suspect that proving it to the Stupid Party was most of the reason they did DNA testing (which was 100% positive);) The best part of this whole thing, for me, is that Obama is now virtually untouchable by any of their tea bagger lunatics.

Oh, think again. They're already gearing up with everything from "Why is Obama taking all the credit?" to "Meh, Bin Laden wasn't that important," to, of course, "Show us the body!"

Maybe, but (although I have little faith after 2 Bush terms) I'd like to hope that the American people won't fall for it.

I'd like to hope too but considering we spent most of last week letting a reality-TV host harangue the president about his birth certificate, I have little confidence.

Can you imagine being President Obama, on the eve of this mission, having to deal with that clown? Who knows, maybe he thought it was a great distraction. It's not necessarily a bad thing for our enemies to think we're idiots...as long as we're not actually idiots.

I read an article about it on AOL news, then read the comments, and quite a few of them were saying it was Bush and his cronies who did all the work and Obama took the credit, or that it wasn't really Bin Laden's body, and the fact that they dropped him in the ocean was proof of that, etc, ad nauseum.

*long and loud applause* I LOVE pic.

Man, I have someone on my flist who is of that camp of "omg, Obama's speech was JUST AWFUL how could anyone have voted for him" and I am sitting on my hands because well, arguing against conservatives is a little like banging your head against a brick wall so I don't waste my precious energy these days.

omg, Obama's speech was JUST AWFUL

Well, it DID lack the restrained, presidential solemnity of landing on an aircraft carrier in a borrowed flightsuit, swaggering around like a little kid with the best Halloween costume ever, and then giving a speech under a laughably premature "Mission Accomplished" banner.

I was impressed with Obama's speech. It was sombre and restrained and (showing my prejudices here) very refreshingly un-gung-ho USA USA USA... It sounded to me like a world leader, not a blinkered nationalistic idiot...

I was curious to see how Fox and their cronies would spin this. It took linger than I expected.

They won't want to counter this right away, not while people are still hanging out at Ground Zero with "Obama:1 Osama:0" signs, but I'm sure they'll warm up to it. It'll start with the old "I just find it kind of curious that..." stuff and go from there.

Well if it makes you feel better, we just got a Tory majority government. Fuck.

That is one awesome picture. I got to go to Democratic Senate District Caucus in 2008 and it was one of the most exciting things I've ever done. Also I swear I got to cut in line at the grocery store last week because I had my Obama in '08 t-shirt on.

PS so I'm not sure of the reason for that ramble (except Woo! Obama!) But I forgot the most important thing which I meant to say. I got to cut in line at the grocery store because I was wearing an Obama shirt AND I live in Dallas, Texas. Take that, flight suit cowboy who also lives here.

You got to cut in line or someone cut you in line. In Dallas, I'd think it would be the latter...

Well, I admit I haven't seen much vitriol from the conservatives...yet. "Too busy killing bin Laden" says it all. Even Trump and Sarah Palin's teleprompter writer know that they if they attack Obama now, there would be a huge backlash against the guy that finally got bin Laden. I suspect they won't do ANYthing.

My prediction is that they are going to quietly allow a day to celebrate, and then they are going to change the subject -- FAST. Probably back to the budget deficit/debt meme, which is the only thing that's they've gotten to stick.

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is already wondering why Bin Laden was buried at sea so quickly. So it begins.

I noticed that - and some people over here in the UK are questioning that - where was the proof it was Bin Laden etc etc...

Ha! That and the picture really made me laugh, and tonight I had to show my husband. We both laughed. Bitterly, but still a laugh. Thank you for that.

I confess, Americans puzzle me. Nearly every quote from a US politician yesterday talked about Americans killing Bin Laden, America's victory over terrorism, Americans being saved from terror, 3000 Americans having been slaughtered by terrorists in 9/11. Yet when pressed, nobody seems to have a clear idea of what exactly an American is. I mean, if Obama isn't American, what the hell is he?
And there, you have just explained it - he's a Kenyan Muslim Marxist jiggaboo. Natch.

This. I love this. :D

Love the poster, too!

I've been waiting for America to nail this bastard for ten whole years! I certainly thought that the Bush administration had forgotten all about him. *rolls eyes*

This is what should have happened back in 2002: going after the RIGHT guy, not so much a regime that had nothing whatsoever to do with 9/11 (however vile Saddam was, and he was).

It's about time! Well done, President Obama, and your military intelligence and Navy Seal guys.

Great picture :) I think this announcement damaged Donald Trump even more than Obama's stand-up comedy at the White House Press Corps dinner. I don't think he'd be stupid enough to demand proof of a bin Laden death certificate - he'd be walking into a joke that is already going round online. He can't pretend now that he's proud of his "achievement" last week when all he did was prove that he's a racist and that Obama really did have more important things going on.

Still, he can try, and damage the Republican party even more. That would be fine :)
