I have this feeling that a lot of important stuff was revealed in this episode but all I could focus on was the great star-crossed love of Dean and Castiel. It's just more obvious than ever that Castiel loves Dean so very, very much.
Yeah, Castiel, I know you kept trying to throw us off track with all that stuff about how the WinchesterS-plural are your friends but come on. Come on. It's all about Dean, you poor bastard. You love Dean so very, very much.
And you know, Sam, I see you using the word "us" there but you know as well as we all do that everything Castiel does is for Dean, not for you-plural because Castiel loves Dean so very, very much.
And finally, Dean. Dean, Dean, Dean. What are we gonna do with you? Don't give me that stuff about how Cas is "like a brother" to you. You love him, man. You love him. Did you hear all those involuntary little squeals I started emitting around 9:45 EST? That was for you, Dean. You and Cas. Because it's all over your face that you love him so very, very much.
I swear, I could watch 40 minutes of Dean and Castiel staring at each other. I really could. They just love each other so very, very much.

Date: 2011-05-07 02:25 am (UTC)Apparently the writer of this ep recently referred to Dean and Cas's relationship as a long-distance marriage? Yeah, that's getting closer to it. For all Dean's threats about stopping Castiel, he really wants to save him. Just as Castiel only felt like himself that moment when he was killing demons who were trying to hurt Dean.
Also how sad was it that Castiel felt all happy about giving Sam back to Dean to make Dean happy, only to watch Sam walk away and realize he had done something wrong. He loves Dean so much! But he's shy!

I KNOW!!!!!! (I think there was something in there about Castiel bringing Sam back on Crowley's orders but I swear, I couldn't follow any of that because OMG. Everything Cas does is for Dean.)
It was INSANE. It was the Cas-n-Dean Hour. When Dean was walking out of the house leaving Cas behind in that ring of fire and he turns around and looks at Cas and he looks so heartbroken and OMG I'm babbling. And when Cas was watching Dean raking up the leaves and OMG I'm babbling again. And holy cow is it just me or is Misha playing this whole thing like a hopeless, lovestruck suitor? I don't know what he's doing I just hope he keeps doing it!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Date: 2011-05-07 02:55 am (UTC)Interesting that last week Dean was making baby jokes to Cas and now he was saying angels are like children....which I think pretty much lays out that Dean considers Castiel his responsibility. He doesn't really blame Cas for what he's doing because he knows teaching angels about freedom is like teaching poetry to fish. If Bobby or Sam really tried to take him out Dean would be swooping him up and protecting him.

Date: 2011-05-07 05:10 pm (UTC)I have to differ, because so far he's cranked out the only episodes that I really liked this season -- including "The French Mistake" which I was convinced was going to be a mega-meta-catastrophe.
There's something very subversive about Edlund this season. "The French Mistake" was chock-full of pointed barbs disguised as comedy, while last night's episode put Castiel (and by extension, Dean) right in the center of the spotlight even though Sera had essentially ignored both of them all season.
If this show were airing on pay cable, we'd have had a scene where Dean and Cas hit the sack.
I am almost happier with things just the way they are. I loves me some longing.

Date: 2011-05-08 12:39 pm (UTC)The French Mistake was when I felt we finally got Ben back, pointed barbs and all; and ITA one of the big things was allowing Dean/Jensen and Castiel/Misha to come back to the forefront. But beginning with last year's The Devil You Know, which really kick-started the ball rolling with throwing Dean out of the mytharc and off onto the sidelines (which now seems to have been Sera's intent all along), his writing to me has felt incomplete and more writing-by-the-numbers. Then this year he seemed content simply to give Sera what she wanted, which was lots of shirtless Jared/Spambot and odes to Spambot's sexual prowess, and not a lot else. I dunno, I just felt like he lost his Dean-love - or maybe it was being constrained by Sera; but the one thing he did retain was his D/C-love (thus the "profound bond" line in The Third Man).
Anyway, all I know is I'm really happy again with the Ben we're getting here at the end of the season. :)

Date: 2011-05-08 12:48 am (UTC)methe camera, I literally gasped. My heart went pitter-pat over how extraordinarily FINE Misha Collins is. *swoon*And then the entire episode was Dean/Cas! Oh God, the longing. I ate it up, every bit of it.
It's nice to see Dean realize that Castiel loves him so very, very much.

Date: 2011-05-09 11:24 am (UTC)At the end, I also wish Dean's first reaction had been to help/save Castiel, rather that to stop him, when Castiel asked, 'or what?' That doesn't seem to bode well for Castiel or their relationship.

Date: 2011-05-10 01:50 am (UTC)I'm fanwanking that Dean was so devastated by what happened with Sam that his knee-jerk reaction is "this stops now." After all, he came around to giving Ruby the benefit of the doubt (at Sam's insistence) and look where that got him. You can't blame the guy for instantly rejecting any alliance with a demon, no matter what the circumstances.

Date: 2011-05-10 03:23 am (UTC)Dean had already offered to help Castiel, Castiel refused his help and more than that claimed nothing was broken. Dean's first reaction WAS to help/save Castiel and Castiel refused it. So there was nothing left to Dean but let Castiel know if he continued going the way he was going, Dean would have to stop him.
More than that, I don't think the excuse about "not wanting to get Dean involved" is actually a good reason. It's an understandable one, but not a good one. Dean's a grown man, he should have been allowed to decide what he wanted to do. But Castiel's decision also showed that he himself has no doubt whatsoever in Dean's willingness to help him - he didn't ask Dean because he knew Dean would help him, sacrifice for him if need be.
The fact is Dean is every bit as willing to help Castiel as Castiel is to help him - Dean wasn't less of a friend to Castiel, Castiel didn't allow him to be all the friend he could be to him. Rather than allow Dean to be a friend to Castiel to fullest extent, Castiel turned to Crowley instead.
Let's put it this way, I know why Castiel made the decisions he did - IMO they are still absolutely the wrong decisions and he did have choices, he chose the wrong ones. He had a clear choice, as the episode itself showed, imo, between Dean and Crowley and he chose Crowley.
I was actually really happy that for once they didn't try to make out like it was all relative, which worked so badly with Sam(really Sam? Dean forced you choose Ruby because he didn't kiss your ass enough?) - they really made it pretty clear textually I thought that Castiel had a choice and when Castiel tried to turn it around and somehow blame Dean("Where were you?"), Dean had an answer for him and it was the right one "I was there, where were you?" - and just to make sure no one missed it, they flashed back to the flash back of Castiel standing there in the garden, choice between Dean and Crowley and choosing the wrong guy to follow.
So it isn't IMO a case of Castiel had no choices and Castiel is just misunderstood and if only they knew the whole story their opinion would change. Castiel had choices and he chose a demon over Dean and he keeps getting in deeper and deeper and he's refusing the hand that is offered to help him.
He is refusing the signs he's being given - the funny thing is Castiel actually kind of says it but doesn't seem to really get the significance - he says that Sam not being right after Castiel pulled him from Hell should have been his first sign.
It was the first and there have been many since then. There were even more in this episode - his sign is that the guy he shares a "profound bond" with is asking him to please trust him and not to do it and he's refusing to do so by claiming superiority in being an angel, while Dean is "just a man".
The real question is, IMO, will Castiel realize it while he can still help himself and while he can still get Dean to help him. Will he realize it before he's too far gone?

Date: 2011-05-10 11:41 am (UTC)My impression is that after Castiel was resurrected, he went back to heaven only to find out that Raphael wanted to reboot the averted apocalypse, and expected Castiel to be on his side. Crowley then popped up with the proposal that he form an alliance with Castiel to wage civil war in heaven against Raphael. They apparently need souls as some sort of spiritual cannon fodder, hence the whole Titanic thing (I don't really get this, because wouldn't Crowley, as king of hell, have billions of souls at his disposal?)
Under these circumstances (if I have them correctly), I don't really understand how Dean could have helped Castiel anyway...except of course that he's Dean, and therefore, awesome. It seems to me that Castiel was really between a rock and a hard place -- either let the apocalypse happen or ally with Crowley and wage civil war against Raphael.
The other thing I'm not entirely clear on is Sam's resurrection. Castiel just did that on his own, right? It had nothing to do with Crowley's soul-gathering or raiding purgatory or anything else?
