Exile on Main Street Revisited
May. 28th, 2011 12:02 amGiven my newfound pledge to watch the show for nothing but the most gratuitous, shallow enjoyment it can offer (primarily, Jensen's Face), I decided that this summer I would watch the reruns of the season just past, which I normally don't bother doing. But what the heck, there's nothing on on Friday nights anyway. And y'know, Jensen's Face.
It was so great to not question things like Lisa's "best year of my life" comment because, I mean...Jensen's Face. Of course it was the best year of her life! Sure he's an alcoholic-in-training, demon magnet, textbook PTSD case and has a family that looks straight out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre but...Jensen's Face!
During that scene my jaw dropped when Lisa was recounting all the good things about their year together and she said, "You were so amazing in bed," and I was like WHOA, I don't remember that! In light of that, the whole "best year of my life" thing made even more sense and then I realized she'd actually said, "You were so amazing with Ben," and I was like, oh. Boring. But still, Jensen's Face!
Then later when the Campbells were being all douchey -- in fact, they were even MORE douchey on a second viewing -- I totally ignored the doucheyness, just like I set aside the knowledge I have now that all of this doucheyness won't even lead to anything because all of these characters are so thoroughly irrelevant that they'll be dead before the end of the season so we sat through all this doucheyness and vampires-on-the-Mayflower and golf-ain't-gonna-cut-it crapola FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...I just set all that aside and focused on how Jensen's hair was a little longer at the start of this season and he was sort of brushing it off to the side and it looked really, really adorable. And you know, his mouth is just WAY too rosy to be natural but then I see him at cons and stuff and it's the same way. Maybe he uses that tinted Chapstick or something. Either way it works. It really works.
So anyway, it looks like we're off to a great Season Six! I can't wait to see where Jensen's Face goes with this!

Yeah, who am I kidding, as long as Jensen is tethered/agrees/wants to continue working on the show, I'm around until the CW cancels it (which I still think S7 is going to be it anyway). So I need to approach it just like you're doing - Jensen Pretty. It's all I got, it's what I'm here for, it's all that matters. I'll get my story-telling fix from other better programs. ;)
One of these days, though, post-SPN, I'd like to marry The Pretty to Good Story-Telling!

Date: 2011-05-28 07:55 pm (UTC)Jensen has supposedly said that he is not signed up for an eighth season, but that he wouldn't be opposed to doing it. Maybe he already knows something we don't know. Or maybe he was just talking.
I don't know. Friday nights are considered such an unimportant night for television that a show could conceivably hang out there comfortably for a pretty long time. SPN has never been a ratings powerhouse, but it's always had great audience involvement, which networks are starting to pay more attention to. The show also got some pretty good media attention this year from TV Guide and The New York Times and a few other outlets. I think that as long as SPN holds onto its current ratings, there's really no reason why CW would cancel it unless the stars decide they want some outrageous pay increase and the network doesn't think they're worth it. If they could renew One Tree Hill for an eighth season, I see no reason why SPN couldn't go that long!

Well, the Pretty will go wherever Jensen does, but I can't imagine loving a character as much as Dean. He was just made for that role.

Date: 2011-05-28 03:48 pm (UTC)There's no way I can re-watch S6, though. Considering how much I wound up disliking the entire thing, re-watching the episodes that I enjoyed early in the season would likely ruin my moderately pleasant memories of them. You know, back when I still believed it was all "going somewhere." Heh.
On another note, I recently watched the first two seasons of "Sons of Anarchy" (great show, although not at all my usual genre) and was amazed at how good Mitch Pileggi was in it. He's an excellent actor; SPN just didn't give him anything to work with in Samuel. What a waste.

Date: 2011-05-28 08:13 pm (UTC)SPN has made some baffling casting decisions. They get good actors like Mitch Pileggi and Lauren Cohan to fill utterly thankless roles where they have nothing to do, and then when they need to fill a pivotal role like Ruby they cast a lifeless piece of wood like Genevieve Cortese. Not everyone liked Katie Cassidy as Ruby, but she was really warming up to the role by the end of Season 3, and I think Season 4 and the Sam/Ruby dynamic would have been a whole different animal if they'd kept her on board. I really think the main reason they replaced her is because they planned to make Ruby Sam's girlfriend, and Cassidy had such a tough edge to both her looks and her bearing that they didn't think it would work. They had to replace her with someone "softer" who conformed more to what this show considers babe material.
At least they really scored with Misha Collins -- but then again they pretty much wasted him this year. Next year doesn't look to be more promising, especially if he's been demoted to guest star instead of costar.

Date: 2011-05-30 03:42 pm (UTC)I liked Cassidy much better and her being replaced made no sense to me at all until I read your post about SG casting professionally pretty versions of herself to sex it up with Jared. What a bummer for her to have that backfire so dramatically.

This was a thoroughly unfounded and unprovable speculation on my part, and I'm sure if I'd said it outside of my own LJ I'd have gotten a new asshole torn for myself. Nevertheless, it's kind of a weird coincidence that not just Cortese but nearly every other female love interest on this show -- especially those connected to Sam -- has borne more than a passing resemblance to Gamble. In Cortese's case, she was supposedly cast to play a very minor character and then she was suddenly bumped up to the role of Ruby right before the season began shooting. That tells me they either didn't try very hard to find the right actress for Ruby...or that Cortese was sure in someone's wheelhouse, for whatever reason. I can't imagine it really had much to do with her acting chops.

Date: 2011-05-30 04:00 am (UTC)Jensen's Face is so talented, I'm sure Jensen's Face will do amazing things with season 6. ;)
BTW, in case I forget to tell J, if you need Jensen's Face and Misha's Face in The Firelight when you are here - it's on my computer. All you have to do is turn on the computer in my room and you can access it via the Tivo in the living room. In case you want to stare at, then shout things, drink vodka and pass out - not that you've ever done that.

Date: 2011-06-01 12:30 am (UTC)I thought Lisa said "good in bed" the first time I saw it, too. I found myself thinking, 'Damn, she's bendy like Gumby and she eagerly praises his skills - no wonder she stood out in Dean's memories!' Since it went without saying that if Dean weren't good with her child then he certainly wouldn't have lived under her roof, in retrospect the line was a bit pointless.
I guess the only one who's that mind-blowing in bed is Souless Sam, who apparently made a hooker forget to collect her money (?!?!) in a later episode.
I personally liked seeing Dean with his shirt tucked into his belted jeans. Gives us a better view of his ass.

Date: 2011-06-01 02:31 am (UTC)I remember the first time I saw this ep I wondered what they were trying to say by showing Dean with his shirt tucked in. Is this supposed to be a suburban look? Because I'd be inclined to think that most guys in the 'burbs are leaving their shirts pulled out to hide their beergut. Or were they trying to point out that Dean's shirt was tucked in because for the first time he didn't have to have a gun shoved down the back of his jeans? Either way, it was instantly noticeable to all of us Dean connoisseurs.
There was also something interesting going on with the right leg of his jeans. There was like a worn-away spot or something. I kept staring at it, wondering if that red patch was an actual patch or if those were his shorts sticking out.

Date: 2011-06-01 04:52 am (UTC)You do have a point. The guys I know don't tuck their shirts in unless they're on their way to work. Is this Dean's overcompensating subconscious telling him this is the way 'normal' guys are supposed to look?
Eh, whatever. It's still a nice view.
