I'm seeking some enlightenment from those of you well-versed in Supernatural -- the show itself, not so much the fandom, although these things would have most likely been discussed in fandom. It's sometimes hard to separate fact from opinion when reading fan discussions, so I'm wondering...

1) I've seen suggestions that writer/producer Sera Gamble is not terribly fond of Dean's character and her interpretation of him (as a flat-out arrogant jackass) sometimes has to be toned down. True?

2) I've heard that CW head Dawn Ostroff is not terribly fond of the show, period, and that every season so far has boiled down to a battle of wills to keep it on the air. Supposedly she's been quite vocal about her dislike for the show. True? It seems pretty impolitic to me that a network president would openly slam one of her own properties, no matter what her personal opinion of it happens to be.

I really don't know that much about what goes on around the show, and I stay out of the fandom side of it because I just don't have enough time to devote to reading the fic, or getting involved in discussions. But it sounds sort of counter-productive to me for a head of a station to be openly critical of one of their most successful series. Sort of like cutting off your nose, innit? I suppose I should pay more attention to who writes the episodes too.

I'm just kind of curious because even though I haven't done a lot of prospecting in the fandom, I keep seeing these two things coming up as statements of fact. And I just wonder if there's really conclusive evidence behind them or if they're just speculation.

I think Raelle Tucker was the big Deangirl on the show and that came through both in the episodes she wrote by herself and those she wrote with Sera Gamble. So I'm wondering what Tucker's departure will mean for Dean's character. As to Dawn Ostroff, I think that SPN unfortunately is NOT one of their most successful series (that honor probably goes to America's Next Top Model or something) but at the same time I can't imagine that a network president is going to come right out and say bad things about a show that's still on the air -- unless she has some strange resentment towards the shows that the CW inherited from the old WB. Even so, it would seem like bad form and bad business.

#1 It's funny. I thought Sera is really a Dean girl because IMHO she's always good in writing Dean-centric eps (and I don't think she ever has a Sam episode). I also think in this season, Dean is really Dean and Sam is really Sam.

Btw, your comment about 3.02 where you said how Dean becomes a third character makes me sad. :')

Hmmmm...Sera Gamble has written some great episodes for Dean -- when she was writing with Raelle Tucker ("Faith" comes to mind). On her own, she seems to focus more on Sam. "Houses of the Holy" and "All Hell Breaks Loose 1" were two that she wrote without Tucker. So I don't know. I'm not saying any of this is a fact, but I've noticed a number of comments on the TWoP boards that Gamble needs to be "reined in" or that her own statements on the DVD commentaries have indicated that she's not wild about Dean's character. Interestingly, she's now written two episodes that had him interacting with kids ("Dead in the Water," which she wrote with Tucker, and last week's "The Kids Are Alright.") Maybe she sees that as a way to "redeem" his character? Beats me, but the whole kids thing always leaves me cold, no matter what the story (Harry Potter Epilogue, anyone??) though I'm aware that a lot of people love that sort of thing.

I was just speculating on what might happen if Ruby becomes to prominent. Let's hope that doesn't come to pass!

Not sure about #2 (though I've heard it said as well) but for #1, try the Writers Thread on TWoP.
