Look, I'm all for the Repubs not throwing some huge party while New Orleans is drowning YET AGAIN but to make it into a backdrop for a freaking publicity stunt is just beyond the pale. McCain was eating birthday cake with his good buddy Bushie while NOLA was going under three years ago and if he things people are going to forget that this time around he needs to think again.

I give the country a pass on 9/11 because everyone was in such a state of shock, but we had no excuse for still being in a state of shock three years later when we re-elected him in 2004.

I enjoy your prose, but am saddened by your vitriolic attacks on McCain. One can disagree with another's politics without being so vicious. He is not a "doddering old fool" just because of his age or because you disagree with him, much less a "fucking idiot". Again, if you disagree on an issue, bring it up and say why and if you have a suggestion you feel is a better solution, state it. I would not attack anyone because of age, sex, race or religion. The man has served this country well and long. Many of his stands have been against the mainstream. Did he choosed Palin because of her sex? He probably did so and that is politics just as much as Obama chose Biden to show he had someone with experience in his camp and also to be his attack dog so her, Obama, could continue to be the soft, pleasant voice of change. These decisions don't make them bad men, just politicians both. I'm not sure where such dislike is coming from...I have dislike various candidates in the past, but never felt the need to be so personal or savage in attacking them. In fact I would not say I ever attacked anyone. If I disagreed on an issue I would discuss the issue and why I disagreed. When we go to the polls, we should not vote for someone because he is cute, young, or black. Neither should we vote against someone because he is old, white, or what we would consider not for change. What do they say about health care? How will they pay for it? What do they plan to do in the energy field? How will they pay for it? Who gets the tax cuts and who gets the tax raise? And why? These are the issues to discuss.

I am saddened by the vitriolic attacks that the Republicans have staged against the vast majority of the American people, the environment and other nations. That is where the dislike is coming from. The time for playing nice is long past. Democrats have been playing the "higher ground" game for years and it hasn't gotten them anywhere and I am really, really tired of the calls for polite discourse being applied primarily to Dems while the Republicans and our corporate-controlled media gleefully frame any Democrat as anything from a effete elitist to a terrorist appeaser. I've seen enough of McCain's stand on the issues to consider him an idiot who has nothing to offer this country except more Republican cronyism, corruption and failure. Sorry, can't help myself. Sometimes I just gotta call it like I see it.

I disagree with him and the Republicans on pretty much all issues and I'm stating that my solution is to vote Democratic.

Oselle, if you haven't yet read Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine", please go out and find yourself a copy. As bad as you know the current administration to be, this will cement your feelings about it, the IMF, the World Bank, the CIA, and the Friedmanites that dip their fingers into every foreign country they can.

If I could afford to buy 1000 copies and mail them to friends, and friends of friends, and donate them to libraries, I would.

I haven't read it but it was heavily excerpted on a number of the blogs I read, which also featured many interviews with Klein. If you haven't seen it yet, this short film (http://www.naomiklein.org/shock-doctrine/short-film) by Alfonso Cuaron provides a really good overview of what "shock doctrine" means. The shock doctrine is something we've all seen in action and is terrifying in its simplicity and effectiveness.

You're not fooling me at all. "How will we pay for it" and "what, specifically, will Obama do" reveals you as a conservative troll. Conservatives have been squawking those statements all weekend, and you are just parroting them now.

How will we pay for it? By borrowing from China, of course. It was okay with you while Bush did it, wasn't it?

You think McCain will break away from that? If McCain was truly maverick enough to break away from the Republicans in charge, he would have chosen Joe Leiberman as his running mate. But he had to go with the Rove choice to attract the fundie vote, no more, no less.

I'm laughing because I was thinking "conservative concern troll" myself, though I didn't say it. I had a number of discussions like this four years ago with other conservatives who were oh-so-sad over this supposed lack of civility. Same shit, different year. Four years ago I actually tolerated this nonsense. Now I see it for what it is -- a cute way of saying STFU. I never "attacked" McCain for being old. I've "attacked" him for being a fucking idiot who says idiotic things and has idiotic ideas about and plans for this country. We can support ourselves with eBay? There are no uninsured people? Being mayor of a tiny town in Alaska is perfect preparation for being Vice President? I was a POW so I can't remember how many houses I own? WHAT!?!? This guy oughta come with his own frigging laugh track and I'm supposed to be polite about that?? Please.
