LOL...a comment from [livejournal.com profile] roque_clasique got me thinking about what Season 6 would be like if I were showrunner.

Well lemme tell ya.

Never been a big fan of the MoTWs so that's right out the ol' winder. There are only so many variations on ghosts, mythical creatures and pop-culture Judeo-Christianity and SPN has already covered most of them. Plus they've already ripped off so much from Neil Gaiman that the well's pretty dry there too.

I figure it's the last season so why not go nuts and treat it like a miniseries with 22 episodes. Just one long storyarc, that's what I like. Lost has been doing it for seven years, surely SPN can do it for one. I like journey-related stories so there'll be lots of traveling. One-shot characters that are interesting but never quirky. I hate quirky. Fuck that shit. What else do I like. Oh...I like Dean getting beaten up. So he'll get beaten up. A lot. Hmm, I also like post-apocalyptic stories...

Shit, you know what? I'd just jump the whole thing forward to 2014 Endverse and let 'er roll. 22 blazing eps of Dean, Castiel and Antichrist Sam. End the fuckin thing the way they ended The Road Warrior -- fire, smoke and "that was the last we ever saw of him."

Yes.

Hell I've written it. Lazarus Came Forth, Feast of All Saints...I'm a big fan of the one big storyarc.

My wish for season 6 is fairly tame. Good old domestic!SamandDean. Sam doing his lawyer thing, Dean doing his garage thing, buying curtains together, all 22 episodes ...

Um, yeah...hope you don't have your heart set on this. ;)

I fully support this...especially the 'Dean getting beat up a lot' part.

Though I would make sure to include a thigh holster.

I'm with your scenario!

The writers should go balls to the walls and fire the series three/five years into the future. Have something (maybe not the demons)horrible from the past 5 seasons running them into the ground every damned week and keep it continuous (like 24). Never let up on the angst. Never let up on the beatings. Never let up on the threat to either of their lives.

None of your simpering, whishy washy happy endings for me, man.

*Bangs fist on the table* Bring it on!!

I'm not opposed to a happy ending but I'm all for balls to the wall. 24 is a good example of how to do that. Of course if they do that well, that would mean a Season 7...and a Season 8...and then Jensen, at least, would probably lose his mind.

Given how bored Jared has acted most of the season, and his stated desire for Sam to go evil, this is not a bad scenario at all. I agree they have to do a miniseries type of final season - one arc (which supposedly they've claimed they will do) that takes them through the series finale.

Sure, they could have season five end with Samifer - though that wouldn't be ending the Apocalypse scenario and they swore they'd do that; or, something else having taken over Sam as a remnant of the dust-up with Lucifer. Then Castiel is either completely fallen, or is given the choice to stick with Dean to hunt down and fight Evol!Sam, with the series ending at the point where Dean saves Sam.

Yeah, works for me. ;)

Is this the new plan, something that came out when Sera was named showrunner? Because everything I'd heard up until now said that the plan was to go back to a straightforward, Season One MoTW format, which I don't see how they would pull off at this point.

Kripke et. al. have stated a few times about going more "intimate", like season one, but haven't said specifically that they were going back to straight MOTW - which, I think most fans agree wouldn't really work. But it was Kripke who said there would be a season six arc - not as big as the Apocalypse (though some would argue that hasn't shaken out to be so big after all), but there would be one specific thing they were doing or looking for throughout the year.

Since Kripke and Singer are still going to be hands on, and Kripke is just dumping the day to day stuff on Sera's head, I think whatever story they've been fleshing out is going forward now - and, again, Sera and Kripke have both stated they've been working on season six story lines already, which may be obvious the way season five is playing out with possibly not as much attention to this year's story as we'd expect after such a strong season four.

They really are dragging out the apocalypse, so I'd be tempted to say they're going to postpone that to Season 6...but then that whole string of comedy episodes at the beginning of this season would have been written and shot well before they even knew there would be a sixth season, so it's not like dragging things out is something they just started doing. I think they're going to have to extend SOME of the Apocalypse into Season 6, because otherwise they won't have much of a cliffhanger for this season. But I supposed they could wrap that up by midseason and then devote the rest of the season to a single storyarc.

I sort of cringe wondering what "intimate" really means for this crew. Do they just mean "smaller" stories (i.e. no end-of-the-world stuff)? I wish I trusted them but like I've said, I really don't. I really love BIG storyarc stuff when it's done well. SPN has sometimes not done it so well, but I still don't want them to go back to an entire season of 40-minute standalones. I just don't think it would be that interesting.

Then again...Jensen's face.

And when all is said and done, that's really what it comes down to for me. LOL!

Let's see how the rest of the season shakes out. Fingers and toes crossed! ;)

The season-long story arc worked well for Buffy too. But it can only be one season, or it turns into the X-Files.

Well, I'd hope the Joss Whedon influence would end there. YMMV, but not a very big fan of the Joss.

I have to cut Joss a little slack; he had very little budget and very little time to make Buffy. When he did spend time on an episode it was spectacular. But about 1/2 through Buffy Season 3 the whole thing kinda went down.

I've just never been able to get into any of Whedon's stuff. Buffy and Angel never held my interest and I totally didn't get the fuss about Firefly. Dollhouse was just a big bleh for me from the get-go. There are elements of his style that I see echoed in Supernatural that are usually the things I like least about the show. I was a huge fan of The X-Files and preferred Chris Carter's more serious approach to what could have been a very silly concept -- I've felt like Supernatural is at its best when it leans more towards Carter than Whedon.
